Paul Ryan: Pope 'Triggering Exact Dialogue We Should Be Having'
Newsmax ^ | 25 Dec 13 | Drew MacKenzie

Pope Francis' controversial economic views have startled Republicans who are now having to rethink their relationship with the Catholic church, according to Politico.

The pontiff has recently attacked "trickle-down economics, saying that the theory has never been confirmed by fact," and "that it expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power."

The pope also criticized "the idolatry of money" and slammed capitalism as a "new tyranny."

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh has already called Time's "Person of the Year" a closet Marxist and now Republicans in Washington are taking aim at the pope, who took over the office in March.

New York Rep. Peter King, who went to a Catholic school and graduated from the University of Notre Dame’s law school, told Politico that the pope’s economic statements are demeaning.

King said that Francis uses the phrase “trickle-down” as a “pejorative” term, “like some liberal speechwriter stuck it in.” He said, "I genuinely believe (that) supply-side economics does more to help people come out of poverty, move up in the world."

But King added, "On the other hand, we shouldn’t be dwelling on wealth. The guidance I’d take from this is, when I support conservative economics, I should do it in a way that helps the most people.”

Arizona Sen. John McCain said that, although he was "impressed" with the pope's modern day outlook on social issues and helping the poor, "his economic perspective I’m not particularly enamored with."

The pope maintains that he wants to de-emphasize the church's position on issues like abortion and gay marriage and instead concentrate on more important problems such as helping the poor and the underprivileged.

The idiots attacking the Pope just don’t get it.

The Pope is not a politician and his words have nothing to do with the role of government.

Trickle down economics only works as a government policy if the citizens are guided by christian moral virtues. If people attack the Pope and reject christianity then capitalism cannot work. You’d have to be very dumb to call the pope a marxist. He’s the anti-Marxist. The Catholic church is the only institution standing in the way of global socialism.

The Pope should stick with the Faith, not economics. He’s ignorant at best and dangerous at worst.

Francis is not speaking ex cathedra when he opines on economic topics.

He is speaking ex recto.

Likely little downside for the GOP here, since so many of my fellow Catholics continue to reflexively pull the lever for Democrats regardless. Despite the fact that the Democrats continually go out of their way to take a p*ss on all of our most cherished values.

The Pope: “...I have met many Marxists in my life who are good people...”

Well, Pope Francis - I never met a militant capitalist who raped a child or impaled a Christian on a bayonet.

I have met plenty of marxists with their masks off though.

“The Catholic church is the only institution standing in the way of global socialism.”

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Pope is PUSHING for a one-world authority that can redistribute wealth to make it fair. If that isn’t global socialism, what is?

“We need to be convinced that charity “is the principle not only of micro-relationships (with friends, with family members or within small groups) but also of macro-relationships (social, economic and political ones)”. I beg the Lord to grant us more politicians who are genuinely disturbed by the state of society, the people, the lives of the poor! It is vital that government leaders and financial leaders take heed and broaden their horizons, working to ensure that all citizens have dignified work, education and healthcare...

... Indeed, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find local solutions for enormous global problems which overwhelm local politics with difficulties to resolve. If we really want to achieve a healthy world economy, what is needed at this juncture of history is a more efficient way of interacting which, with due regard for the sovereignty of each nation, ensures the economic well-being of all countries, not just of a few.”

Also, as Bishop, he got a salary from the Peronist government of Argentina.

I say “The congressional retirement system is overly generous....most of these retirees go on to second careers working for lobbyists and getting paid to sit on boards and do nothing but draw a paycheck....and they keep a millions in campaign funds.... the money we save by getting rid of these frauds will be savings for the people...”

Ryan and people like him, can’t understand that the men and women in the military get paid a lot less than their civilian counterparts. In fact, if you consider the hours they’re actually on duty the pay is dismal. Plus, their families are part of it but don’t get paid jack.

I hope Ryan loses his conservative support. If he loses just a little the democrats in his district will send him to work for the lobbyists.

I don't listen to Rush 3X5. Did he really say these words? I heard his careful criticism but I never heard the word Marxist. I seriously doubt it.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh has already called Time's "Person of the Year" a closet Marxist

I never knew that, just thought it was a natural thing.
Does that mean I have to change after 60+ years to stay on FR?

This pope is either an imbecile or a heretic. He is at least one of the two and quite possibly both.

Remember Pope Fancis is living out what St. Francis of Asissi said “preach the Gospel and when possible use words”. Translation: Preach the Gospel by WALKING the walk you may only be the ONLY GOSPEL there is.

Bad advice...A lot of people look like they could be Christians and are not...The biblical advice is to 'preach' the Gospel...Open your mouth...The Gospel comes by hearing, not seeing...

I thought your hair parted on the side that it wanted to part on! Some people have a choice? My hair parts on the left side and I am a woman, so is that the male side?

I switched part sides from left to right to left. People looked at me quizzically - did you lose weight? You look different. No one ever put their finger on it.

Dear xzins,

Nowadays, it's tough for anyone to get a new job, veteran or not.

But there are still many folks (like me) who mentally award extra “points” to folks whose résumés include service in the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans often have a bit of a leg up on the rest of folks when looking for a new career. In tough times like these, when lots and lots of folks in their 40s (and even 50s) are having to start second, or even third careers, veterans are relatively advantaged compared to non-vets.
