If the school gets Federal $$ (they all do) then yes, this is a violation of the 1st Amendment.
It is OK to charge for security but all groups must be charge the same.
I think it is the Liberty Foundation that takes cases like this?
This needs to be fought in court IMMEDIATELY!
“Free speech” to the Left — has always meant shouting down opposing viewpoints.
Is University of Buffalo a public or private venue?
If it is public this appears to be an unconstitutional act of censorship.
If it is private I believe they can do whatever they want.
Somehow I’ll bet the answer to my question isn’t clear... ;)

The University at Buffalo is the largest campus in the State University of New York system...
it’s full name is State University of New York at Buffalo...public, not private. My Alma Mater and I’m not surprised!
It’s public. U of B is the Buffalo extension campus of SUNY (State University of New York).
Then it seems to me they should treat all groups equally.
BTW, that includes Nazis, Skinheads, Communists, etc.

They ain’t teaching any thing worth knowing, that’s for damn sure.
What would be interesting to know is the process by which an event is deemed “controversial.” I kinda doubt it exists beyond “whatever we think it is.”
I *do* agree that certain speakers/subjects are likely to have a greater chance of incidents, and extra security might not be a bad idea. And, as nearly every campus group gets funding from the Office of Student Affairs, the university (even a public one) does have some right to establish guidelines.
But the definition of “controversial” needs to be in writing, and needs to be publicly presented, so campus groups, not to mention the legislature, and the taxpayers who foot the bill for public universities, can weigh in on it. It’s the only way to ensure some petty tyrant of an administrator doesn’t enforce their will arbitrarily on a campus group they don’t agree with.
Sounds like a case the ACLJ and maybe even the ACLU would take.
Low, I see this a bit different.. The University had every right to expect trouble at this debate, and not the other.. They know the extremist reside on the Leftist side of the isle, and therefore more apt to cause trouble as their sacred cow is being gorged..
Our side seldom get violent in public, conversely, they haven’t displayed any such restraint.. That doesn’t excuse the double standard, nor does it justify the charge, but it does establish the fees should be charged to the group creating the additional security, and that isn’t the Conservative group..
if a fee must be paid it should be the same fee for ALL student groups.
All student groups are equal, but some student groups are more equal than others.
