Russia faces a New Year security nightmare after the second devastating suicide bomb explosion within 24 hours, this time on a rush hour trolley bus in Volgograd.

The latest blast killed at least 14 with 28 wounded, some severely.

A day earlier, an explosion reported as being detonated by a female "black widow" suicide bomber saw 17 killed and dozens wounded in the city's main railway station.

The latest explosion was said by law enforcement officials to have been caused by a man detonating a bomb in a crowded trolley bus packed with early morning commuters.

At least 14 people were killed and 28 wounded in the bombing

'The explosives were detonated by a male suicide bomber, fragments of whose body have been found and sent for DNA testing to identify him,' said Vladimir Markin, spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee, equivalent of the FBI.

'According to preliminary information, the explosive device was the equivalent of at least 4 kg of TNT, and like the explosive device used at the railway station, it was stuffed with metal filings.

It was not immediately clear why he is suspected. The blasts are causing panic in the city, and deep concern all over Russia as people prepare to celebrate the New Year.

'Since both explosive devices contained identical metal filings, this confirms the investigation's theory that two terrorist attacks are linked.'

Security officials today named a suspected perpetrator of the trolley bus explosion as Pavel Pechenkin, from the Volga River republic of Mariy El.....

Prince Bandar told Putin:

“I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics in the city of Sochi on the Black Sea next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us...”

If the Chechens disrupt the Sochi Games Putin will have Prince Bandar’s head on a platter.

This reminds me, that we here in the USA need a lot more public transport like trains, street-cars and buses.

It’s good that Obama isn’t sending anyone of importance to lead our Olympians.

Or . . . . just perhaps there is more than just the Saudis behind these attacks on Russia and Putin.

Islamic Jihadists attacking Russia in Stalingrad. They should read their history. The Russians will not be moved from there.

“...it was stuffed with metal filings. “

Metal FILINGS? Metal dust? Finely powdered metal is sometimes used to augment an explosive, but I have a feeling that what they are trying to describe is steel scrap from a stamping machine or possibly lathe turnings. The individual particles need to be bigger than “filings” for them to act as shrapnel.

You’re ignoring the Sunni/Shia divide when you write that: Russia only has problems with Sunni terrorists. In general, Islamic terrorism is Sunni (Al Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood, and the various Central Asian terrorist groups, plus the not-actively-terrorist Hizb ut Tahrir, are all Sunni and exist because of the anomie created by the destruction of the Caliphate by the New Turks in the 1920’s). And Sunni terrorism is directed against the whole non-Sunni world, draws upon a much larger population, and (thanks to the Saudis following a “pay and point” strategy in keeping their monarchy from being overthrown) is much better financed.

Shi’ite terrorism, by contrast, is narrowly focused against Israel (Hebzollah in Lebanon) and (thanks to the Shah of Iran having been one of “our bastards” during the Cold War) the U.S.

The bombings in Russia are not blowback from support of Iran. In the long run the terrorists plaguing Russia are also enemies of the Iranian regime since the Iranian regime is Shi’ite.

There is a violent ideology in the world that is responsible for almost all of the violence in the world. It is so bad, that in a sane country anyone who belongs to it would be expelled or jailed.

@ Post 7 - you are right. The Russian response to this will likely be far more harsh than anything we imagine in the West.

Saudi Arabia is playing with fire.

I agree. The Russians under Putin will seek to eradicate radical Islamists. I say go for it and ruthlessly. Let Russia be the Great Satan again.

I think only part of your post to "me" was actually applicable to my post. The very end, The bombings in Russia are not blowback from support of Iran

I believe I said I do not believe they are directly related.

My post was more along the lines of - you make "friends" of dogs, don't be surprised when it is dogs that come around and bite you.

Just because it is not the same breed of dog you are buddies with, does not take away the poetry of the situation.

Unfortunately, the same applies to the U.S., and in our case, unlike Russia’s, it’s the same breed of dog that’s doing the biting: we backed the Chechens diplomatically for a long time, and went all in on behalf of the Sunni Muslims in the Balkans, first in Bosnia, then in Kosovo, where the KLA had ties to Al Qaeda and was classified as a terrorist organization by the State Department until Madeline Albright decided her personal animus against the Serbs should be the basis for American foreign policy, not to mention keeping the Wahabi monarchy in power in Saudi Arabia. And our thank you notes from Sunni Islam were the Tanzania embassy bombing, the attack on the U.S.S. Cole and 9/11.
