Tougher N.Y. gun law leads to end of AR-15 sales, rise in felony cases

ALBANY – Nearly a year after passage of the state’s new gun law, dealer sales of popular AR-15 semiautomatic rifles have ended in New York, and arrest data shows that more than 1,000 gun-possession charges in New York City were boosted from misdemeanors to felonies because of the changes.

Meanwhile, 59 people have been charged statewide with misdemeanors for possessing large-capacity magazines or having more than seven bullets loaded in a magazine, both outlawed by the law passed last January in the aftermath of the school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

A report from the Division of Criminal Justice Services shows that only one person charged with the illegal sale or transfer of a gun defined as an assault weapon as of mid-December. The new law tightened that definition to include AR-15s. Owners may keep their older weapons but must register them by April 15.

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with." -Atlas Shrugged

More bs from that fascist little dicktator Cuomo. The SAFE Act has made criminals out of law-abiding citizens who own firearms. This state is run by communists.

How many of these people charged were in the act of committing a crime? How many have a history of criminal behavior?

Their your neighbors, the ones who work their arses off or come up with solutions in their work-sa-day world. Instead they create a parlor game that is a state of Herculean Flux where their is no their their, no absolutes other than what they create to deball the law-abiding and turn into a Felons. Statism at it's finest....

We here in Western NY have no choice. The state is run by the communists in NYC. They think that upstate and western NY is a park like the Adirondacks.

Doesnt matter, they are simply part of the process of eliminating private ownership of firearms.

There are many gunowners who ignore gun control laws until they get charged with a felony like these people.

They need to throw every law abiding citizen in jail. That will solve their crime problem. First, I guess, they need to make law abiding citizens into criminals.

Silliness.

Of course, this is kooky-town where they do things like ban trans fats, tobacco and soft drinks.

Why anybody would voluntarily subject themselves to that kind of crap is beyond me.

“arrest data shows that more than 1,000 gun-possession charges in New York City were boosted from misdemeanors to felonies because of the changes”

Hmm, I guess the thugs and prosecutors (but I am being redundant)in NYS are unaware of “ex poste facto” clause in the US Constitution; Article I, Section 9, Clause 3. They should at least be aware of the document, as they wipe their behinds with it on a daily basis.

Do you think upstate NY could get away with seceding from NYC and either joining PA or forming a separate state? Kind of like what they’re attempting in parts of CO and CA?

NY is surpassing California as the communists capital of America. The citizens of NY are the most ignorant in the Country and they just do not know the damage to freedom they have voted for.

Speaking of this, my son and I were out today, making holes in stuff with noisy things that make holes in stuff, when he reached down and picked up a perfectly good ‘high capacity’ magpul magazine off the ground. Yay. Good thing we’re not in NY or CO, or we’d get 25 to life.

These laws were rushed through illegally, in the middle of the night with *no* public output. I have full sympathy for people that find themselves under the rule of tyrants, even if, at some time in the past, they voted for them.
