Men Without Women: Is There A Male Friendship Crisis?
The Federalist ^ | December 30, 2013 | Bill McMorris

Posted on 12/31/2013 10:46:10 PM PST by Farnsworth

Male friendship is formed around jokes, favors, and associations -- all things under attack.

I got a telephone in my room right when “Boy Meets World” was getting big. I saw the characters chatting on the phone daily and mistook a studio cost-cutting device for how friends interacted. So I grabbed the school directory and called up my best friend at the moment, Sean.

“Hi?”

“Hey, it’s Billy”

“Okay…”

The call was over in seconds. We played full contact 500 on an asphalt driveway the next day with nary a mention of the awkward conversation. Like I said, my best friend. I never realized that the exchange made me more likely to commit suicide. At least that’s what Occidental College sociology professor Lisa Wade says in Salon’s latest men-are-doing-it-wrong column.

Wade says American men—specifically white heterosexuals—lack the intimate bonds necessary to lead fulfilling lives.

“The friendships they have, if they’re with other men, provide less emotional support and involve lower levels of self-disclosure and trust than other types of friendships,” Wade writes.

It’s an observation rooted in experience. Go to enough barbecues and you’ll notice that people tend to self-segregate: Women form circles around living room tables and discuss their feelings; men crowd around the grill, eyes locked on the meat, to discuss grilling techniques.

It wasn’t always this way, Wade argues.

Research shows that boys are just as likely as girls to disclose personal feelings to their same-sex friends and they are just as talented at being able to sense their friends’ emotional states.

But, at about age 15 to 16 — right at the same age that the suicide rate of boys increases to four times the rate of girls — boys start reporting that they don’t have friends and don’t need them.

One thing I despise about this current pop culture is whenever I see two young guys together: mall, theater, grocery store...

My first thought is: are they gay ?

I never thought that way before we were inundated with the homosexual propaganda 24/7...

There used to be a time two guys could just be buddies and nobody would think a moment about it...

This thread is the best example of its own thesis (whatever that might be.) I went through it seeking vulgar male jokes, such as the one about a man going into a bar with an alligator (or crocodile in another version), that I could send to my male friends, and I found none!

The pubs and bars have been the meeting place of guys for centuries. Today, anybody with any sense of responsibility doesn't want to take a chance that one beer might lead to their life being ruined. So instead we today head right home every day. The only interaction guys have with each other outside of work is usually through their kids sports.

That was a very astute observation. I'm old enough to remember the old culture, where co-workers (mostly men) would often meet after work for a beer. Hell, we might tip a beer or two at lunch as well. This was actually prevalent right through the middle 1980s. Today, ordering a beer at lunch with co-workers is usually a career ending mistake.

Younger people who watch the TV show "Mad Men" cannot believe that that was how things used to be. But that is actually very close to how the workplace used to be.

The women are definitely driving most of the changes in the workplace and have produced an environment where men must walk on eggshells all the time. The women definitely have the upper hand in the workplace and due to their protected status, with respect to any sexual harassment, whether actual or perceived, they have the power to destroy the career of any man. So men climbing the career ladder must be deferential and accommodating to women at all times, as they wield immense power, no matter what their rank.

Lest my reply be seen as "women-bashing", I will say that I have had some very good relationships with women in the workplace. To the point where a few of them over the years have openly referred to me as their "work-husband", much to my co-worker's amusement and my wife's chagrin. I don't dare likewise refer to them as my work-wife as that would end my career for sure!

Have women feminized men in the workplace or merely civilized them? That is definitely a topic that is ripe for discussion.

But I do miss the old work culture where we would meet at pubs after work or share a beer at lunch. We wouldn't do it every night but maybe once or twice a week. It was a good way to relieve work tension and increase team bonding. I don't remember us ever getting too drunk to drive during those after-work sessions but in today's society, where even a drink or two can get you a life-ruining DUI, many people simply don't want to take the chance.

Every Bull Dyke has a motorcycle now.

Sarah Palin blew that one wide open!

>> “Car clubs” <<

Every car club I’ve been involved with is very family oriented.

I’ll second that emotion!

>> “First son likes people and likes to hunt, fish, drive in mud, etc.” <<

Here in Californica hunting and fishing are getting very close to Root Canals due to nonsensical regulations, and my business has required that I drive in mud often enough, and suffer the consequences thereof, that I fail to see any recreational element in that activity :o)

Bill Engvall had a great routine on this:

I was at the gym the other day working out with my buddy. My buddy Joey. And he goes “hey, man, I’m getting a divorce.”

I said “Wow, that sucks. Can you spot me?”

That was our whole conversation! So then I go home to my wife, and I say “Hey, Joey is getting a divorce.”

She goes “Oh, my God! What happened?”

“I dunno.”

“What do you mean you don’t know? Is she cheating on him, is he cheating on her?”

“Again, I’m not holding anything back here, I don’t know!”

She goes “Bill, someone tells you they’re getting a divorce and you don’t ask any questions?”

And I go “Well, that’s because he didn’t ask me a question! He didn’t say ‘hey Bill, what do you think about me getting a divorce?’, he said, ‘I’m getting a divorce’, which said to me, ‘I require no further input on your part.’” If he had said ‘What do you think about me getting a divorce?’, I’d have said, ‘Well, you’re gonna be dating again, so you should work on your abs’.

He will probably decide he doesn’t like to drive in mud or sand before long. But while he is young and stupid, we figure he can live and learn. I have to keep telling hubby that it’s ok for son to be stupid. :) I have to remind him that he was once young and stupid though he insists he was never stupid.

I actually know how to pronounce the name of that town correctly. Didn’t they hang the portrait of the mayor, Nicky Pockets, in the town hall after he was sent to the can.

Probably, I knew all of the Brothers.

As my sisters father in law said, “Nick would help you even if he didn’t know you.”

There are some cravats there, know or refrenced. Mass thing.

That is not to say that women don’t do any of those things just that men dominate all of those activities.

“Bull Dykes” ride with other “Bull Dykes”. All the riding clubs and MCs I have ever know were male dominated. If women comes along, she usually rides on the back seat.

Women with guns are sexy. They usually are very conservative. That said, 90 percent of the people at gun ranges and nearly 100 percent all people who tinker with guns or are gunsmiths are men.

My dad is car club guy, a real gear head. He goes to lots of car shows, hangs out with car clubs. Almost everyone working on cars is a man. The few women that attend these events are usually girlfriends or wives. There are exceptions, of course.

The problem with friendships these days is you never know if it's just hanging out,
or if you were tricked into a date and will be the last to know.
