High spirits as Colorado pioneers pot shops
The Australian ^ | 1/2/14

MARIJUANA users celebrated yesterday as Colorado became the first US state to allow retail cannabis sales, putting it in the vanguard of efforts across the country to legalise the drug.

The western state famous for its ski resorts and mountain vistas has issued 348 retail licences - including for small pot shops - that make it legal to sell up to 28g of pot to people aged 21 or older.

Washington state will follow Colorado later this year.

Iraq war veteran Sean Azzariti was the first person to legally purchase cannabis for recreational use in the US. "It's an absolute honour, I couldn't be happier. It's a huge stepping stone for other states as well, so it's a huge honour, to say the least," he said.

Interesting how states can pass their own laws regarding how society approaches drugs....but marriage? States have to obey a cabal of federal judges.

Time for the Tenth amendment to be enforced in all aspects.

Quite right, in that the Constitution says nothing about either one.

This is beyond stupid. Just give the people what they want, and watch them wasted in the streets.

Can individuals grow their own or do they need to buy only from vendors which are monitored by the state govt?

I think growing marijuana is punishable by a federal law.

Here is the real stupidity. They are cracking down on smoking tobacco while promoting the smoking of marijuana.

I just heard on FOX that the Colorado Drug Cartels are selling it for $400.00 an ounce. Four times what the Mexican Drug Cartel is currently getting. Never bought any so I don’t know if this is true. Any happy smoke experts out there who can verify this?

Not all MJ is created equally. The $400/OZ stuff is going to be far superior to the $100/OZ brick stuff.

I wonder if interest in Agricultural majors at the state colleges is spiking upwards?

Natural selection is going to take care of this. On the one hand you have those who crave to escape reality. On the other hand you have GOVERNMENT that sees an opportunity to create more revenue - Taxes on Pot.

There will be an equilibrium at some point that is a balanced between black market (untaxed) cost and ‘government’ cost.

The news outlets ran ad nauseum the video of this guy making the first purchase, with the implication that this was all for the poor veterans suffering for PTSD, not the average pothead as is the reality.

I can't wait to go camping in Colorado and set up camp by mistake next to a group of stoners. Yeah, the wafting odor from their camp to mine after I have paid for my site and spent 10 hours to get there. And I won't be able to complain to anyone which was just a week ago against the law.

On second thought, I don't think I will be camping in Colorado anytime soon.

Once the first year revenue figures are released by the State of Colorado, there will be a stampede by other states. This is an irresistible force (though I agree with you, there will be social consequences to ever-larger numbers of people getting stoned)

Time will tell. You may indeed be right. The “progressive” European cities I’ve visited that followed this course ended up being blighted by filthy, desolated urban spaces; areas of confined rot wherein prostitution and drugs would be legal. No place to raise children, provide a stable community, or establish a successful business. Just hangouts for the stoners and junkies.

The pot heads aren’t even happy now. They say they are working now to legalize cocaine and heroin.

Just a stepping stone. Never enough. It should be interesting to see how this affects employers and work ethic. I worked with a couple 20+ year olds who smoked dope before work and on breaks. They were downright lazy.

We call those “ghettos” and “projects”. We could call them by other terms, but Obama’s Sons would call us racist.

Colofornia should start attracting some of the nation’s finest citizens now. LOL! Lots of new “residents”. Good luck with that!

Same here. Colorado is now off my list from my annual western excursions. Always loved CO, but I don’t want to have to contend with a bunch of deadhead stoners all over the place. Many other locales in other adjoining states that I can go hiking, or visiting historic spots.

I’ve been told it took decades for long-term research to show how smoking cigarettes can effect the body and the only reason people say marijuana doesn’t do the same thing is because there hasn’t been long-term research done yet. Like another said, time will tell. I foresee another mess we will be cleaning up in the decades to come when these potheads enter into their 50s.
