Luxury ski equipment at North Korean resort breaches sanctions

North Korea's new ski resort is Kim Jong-un's pride and joy, but how did the country evade United Nations sanctions to buy state-of-the-art ski equipment from Canada, Sweden and Italy?

As North Korea opened its first ski resort, questions have arisen over how it managed to obtain new Canadian snowmobiles, Swedish snow-blowers and Italian and German snow ploughs despite United Nations sanctions.

The resort at Masik Pass is a pet project of North Korea's young leader, who ordered the North Korean military earlier this year to build him a "world class" resort. Mr Kim spent New Year's Eve on the slopes, declaring that the facilities were "impeccable".

At least one international tour operator is already taking bookings for ski trips to the resort, offering four night packages from Beijing for roughly £1,200.

However, a question mark remains over how North Korea managed to obtain equipment for the resort.

They’re threatening one of our major allies and trade partners and these people are worried about how they got some snowmobiles and skis? Seriously?

"Obviously, they got them from China."

Isn't that pretty much where everything comes from these days, even the money to run the country?

They have “buying missions” around the globe through their overseas trading firms, network of Korean restaurants, and also diplomatic pouch, I am sure they could send some ski equipment like binders and boots and what not, in pieces by diplomatic pack and then reassemble in Pyongyang, for the elite to have top of the line equipment. The UN doesn’t either give a crap or know how to stop it. If it were apartheid Johnannesburg or Pretoria in the 1960s, why the UN would have a team of 200 people 24/7 on the case.
