An 88-year-old World War II veteran was thrown in jail for not being able to afford repairs to his business. Kenneth Knudsons jewelry store was deemed a public hazard zone and in need up updates.
The city of Horton, Kansas offered to do the repair work for $10,000 dollars and apply it to his taxes. Knudson, whose jewelry store business is already struggling, said that was too expensive.
On December 23, he appeared in court and told a judge he did not have the money. The judge then fined Knudson $100 dollars and put him in jail for one night.

Not to worry. On the corner used to be a medical clinic. Knudsens are cool people
“They all are pictured in front of an American Flag yet. Just a bunch of FFs!”
Bunch of Rambo wannabes.
“What purpose does putting a 88 year old man in jail serve?”
Drop The City of Horton an e-mail, I just did!
From the article, it appears he owns the beauty shop as well:
“The beauty salon he owns next door is barely keeping him and his wife of 66 years afloat.”
I hope there are good folk in Horton and its environs who can help this guy. He is providing a service to the small community and working at age 88, paying property taxes in a town that has obviously seen better days.
Yes, I noticed that AFTER I hit the Post button! *blush*
Happens to me all the time! ;)
It is a time honored FR tradition.
Fire Hydrant fails to comply with fire codes. Fine the city government.
Any questions?
How is this possible?
What kind of law allows this?
Wouldn’t the city deeming the property too dangerous to open be the normal solution?

“...someone wants to acquire the property on the cheap.”
Turn to “Attorneys” in the yellow pages. Their names will most likely be listed there.
Uh, that is his wife’s shop (I think). You’re not helping the old fella.
I fully appreciate vets, and the elderly. But I am not sure what his veteran staus 70 years ago has to do with his ability to meet a building statute. Are people suggesting that a fifty year old woman should be held to a different standard?
Either the statute is stupid or it isn’t.
There are times when their status gets them a pass or a hand up. This is not one of them.
“...see what passes for a police departmenf in Horton”
Are the goatees issued as part of the uniform?
Meanwhile, an illegal alien just got the go ahead to practice law....
So tell us what tossing an 88 year old guy in jail accomplishes?
We are talking code violations, not a criminal offence.

An excuse to get a new police chief for abusing Mr Knudsen.
Just goes to show folks, there are swaths of this country that will side with tyranny when push comes to shove. A night in jail over a 100 bucks and some fixin-uppin? Get their names and locations and remember who needs dealt with when the time is right.
