They are generally regarded as historic relics and part of a bygone era of broadcasting history. But even in today’s digital age, there are 11,550 households in the country still watching black and white television, official figures reveal.

The number of black and white licenses have dropped dramatically in recent years and the total has decreased by a further 12 percent over the past year. […]

The cost of a black and white TV license remains frozen at £49 ($80.37) until the BBC Charter Review in 2016. A color license costs £145.50 ($238.65). …

RE :”We had B&W until about 1971. Bought a new Zenith 19” in color at that time. Damned thing was in the shop more than we watched it.”

Americans made really good cars back then too.

My first car bought in the late 70s cost more in repairs than the original price of the car new.

It was a Ford.

They made lots of money fixing it and the unions made out great too, till those evil Japanese showed up and sold us cars that worked.

Man I have those sneaky Japs. It was like Pearl Harbor II

At first, I was interested in the topic of black and white television sets, but I was astounded by the fact that you need to have some sort of “license” to operate a television set in England. That part of the story is mind-boggling. How long has this been going on? How does the government know if you have one or not?
If we had not already declared our independence in 1776, I could imagine the colonies having a Boston “TV” Party, tossing all of our black and white sets, and our color sets, into the harbor along with the tea.

I remember my father (in the late fifties) pulling tubes out of the back of the Motorola. Then we would go to the hardware store and plug them into a machine to find the bad one. We would get a replacement and then go home and put them all back in. This was usually accompanied by some choice language.

Sounds pretty Big Brother.

Weird rules require weird enforcement.

I think the license is in lieu of having to listen to commercials?

You pay for BBC whether you watch it or not.

The funny thing is that Top Gear is probably one of their top rated shows and they bash liberalism and anything green without mercy. Tesla Motors unsuccessfully tried to sue Jeremy Clarkson for a bad review of their electric car.

RE :”LOL, I don’t think our area even had access to cable TV until the early ‘80s...? Even so, if you knew my dad, you’d know why we were “latecomers” to certain technologies. Yeah... I can laugh now... but only cuz I’m married to a techie software guy LOL!”

My parents liked TV, plus with a bunch of kids its cheaper than going out to movies. Dad got HBO when we got cable in mid 70s.

I was reading about the history of color TV.
RCA owned NBC or vice versa and NBC was the first station to make regular color broadcasts because RCA made color TVs.
Disney's Wonder World of Color in the 1960s.

The other networks changed their shows to color in the mid 1960s and you can see the change in reruns of those shows.

We all dream about it but Clarkson actually did it.

Clarkson is the most interesting man in the world.

Not really. RTE in Ireland requires a license and you get the commercials on top of all that.

Around 1952 we bought the first TV set in our rural community. Everything was black and white and the station did not come on until dusk.

One day a school mate told me they were going to be on all day until midnight. I wondered how you would be able to see it in the daytime. Well you actually could not see it as well tho no one really cared.

The real problem is our neighbors would come over to watch TV. Some would stay up and watch it even after we all went to bed. MY Mother got a little irritated over one guy who would stay there until the station went off then not turn the TV off before leaving.
