FIFTY YEARS AGO TODAYJohn Madara and Dave White were two successful songwriters from Philadelphia who managed to sell quite a few songs in the Sixties. Whites pedigree was impeccable, having sung with Danny & the Juniors in the Fifties. Later they formed a group called the Spokesmen, along with disk jockey Ray Gilmore, who later changed his air name to Sean Casey to become a star in New York. They sold this one to Lesley Gore, who had the young Quincy Jones as her producer. This song is about control and possession, and came in at #37 this week.
Lesley Gore: You Dont Own Me

My brother in the Houston area won’t be too happy about that. Might ruin his golf game. LOL!

Running out of oil would have been a total disaster!
Thank goodness, however for your little wood stove! :)

FIFTY YEARS AGO TODAYIn a just world, Lenny Welch would have had a bigger career; his voice was one of the best of his era. This tune, written in 1945 as a slow jazz number by Buddy Johnson, came in at #6 this week.

The RSD has been tough to deal with,
part of it’s unfortunate effects is basically
hypersensitivity to pain, outside things like the
sob zero temps will trigger it.
“Hey, you found the “I has tuff” picture I was looking for!”
Glad there was a bright side.

Hoo-boy. Even your response sounds painful.
Immerse yourself in a fine alcoholic beverage and some nostalgia from Professor Publius.

It’s been REALLY tough, Sis.
Thank God we have that poor, tired
kitchen cook stove.
(and a cord of wood)
It helped the oil last until the delivery yesterday.
Hoping to have Moxie back in action tomorrow.

FIFTY YEARS AGO TODAYIt took me weeks and weeks to go through the songbook of Hal David and Burt Bachrach; thats how prolific these guys were. They operated out of Flo Greenbergs Scepter Records, and just about everything they wrote got its first recording via Dionne Warwick. I went into some detail as to just how rocky the relationship between Dionne, Hal and Burt was in the early days before they all got stinking rich. This was Dionnes second hit, and this week it came in at #22 on its way down. Notice how it sounds like its in 6/8, but if you count, you find all kinds of irregular and asymmetric bars in there. That rhythmic flexibility is Burt Bachrachs trademark.

Back in the 50’s and 60’s when Kraft was sponsoring TV shows, they foisted some really bizarre and gross recipes on the people, all narrated by the velvet voice of Frank Gallup.
