Target Stores security breach just the tip of the iceberg

Target has increased the estimate for the number of customers exposed in the massive hacking attack between Thanksgiving and December 14. It now appears at least 70 million consumers had their credit cards compromised.

Also, Neiman-Marcus announced that they, too, were victims of a cyber attack over Christmas. And in an exclusive report, Reuters is saying that several other well known retailers were also hacked over the holidays.

Neiman Marcus said an outside forensics firm discovered evidence on January 1 that indicated the retailer had been the victim of a cyber attack. It disclosed the breach nine days later, after another inquiry from Krebs, who was following up on reports about a surge in fraudulent charges traced to the retailer.

Target and J.C. Penney Co Inc. waited more than two years to admit that they were victims in 2007 of notorious hacker Albert Gonzalez, who was accused of masterminding the theft and reselling of millions of credit cards and ATM numbers.

During his trial the companies were represented by lawyers who did not identify their clients as Target and J.C Penney.

Doug Johnson, vice president of risk management policy with the American Bankers Association, said banks and credit card firms like Visa are forbidden from naming merchants that have been breached, unless they disclose it themselves.

I still suspect that at least some of this is benefiting the democrats.

Demand a new card be issued instead of waiting for the one you used over the holidays to be compromised.

Investigators believe the attacks originated from eastern Europe, which almost certainly implicates an organized crime ring; Russia, Serbia, Kosovo...

Hey didn't Bill Clinton liberate some of those countries?

I was in Target yesterday and was surprised to see so many shopping there.

In my view, Target provides a significantly better "experience" than Wal-Mart. Cleaner, quieter, less cluttered, etc. I go to W-M because it's cheaper but realize that it is truly the "human cattle car" of shopping.

Target fills a niche for those who like something a notch higher on the scale.

They also treat their employees somewhat better.

Canada is ahead in this area, because most of our debit and credit cards are chipped.

At the Walmart here, the kids are used as human bowling balls to clear the path for the parents who are shopping. If you need help from a sales person, they begin to walk very quickly away from you. They know you will become a bowling pin in short order and they can duck out on you easily.

If I was sentenced to live life as a retail grunt, I’d much prefer that it be served in a Target vs W-M or Dollar General.

LOL as a retired old phart, I can hit the WM on Tuesday morning at 9am and pretty much have only fellow seniors to contend with.

When I was still working, I’d go on Tuesday evening at 8:30, the crowds had departed, but they still had a full slate of cashiers.

Tuesday is the best day of the week since they’ve restocked from the weekend onslaught.

I would go to Target more if there wasn’t so much red inside. Hurts my eyes.

While making a deposit at the bank yesterday my teller used this story and the Niemen Marcus breach as an opportunity to show me a brochure that offers me additional protection to my accounts for $10 a month.

I looked at her and said “but you’re the bank! Are you saying that the money I leave with you COULD be more secure and you’re not already doing that?”

She had no answer.

Target has the same stuff as Wal-mart - it’s just packaged differently. The lights in Wal-mart vibrate and cause anxiety in some people. The layout in Target was designed to make you spend more money. But it’s the same stuff. I don’t shop at either very often. I think I did shop at Target on Halloween to get my granddaughter something. Can I join the class action?

Can I join the class action?

Absolutely, and if you're really lucky, the settlement you get will pay for the postage stamp it took to get on the list. While the plaintiff's attorneys walk away with $300 million.

Must be your store. Here, Americans are the only ones in the store.

I’m assuming you don’t know where the gun counter is found in Target?
