Well, that will help...not at all.

I was in NM recently and I know that they they have a great, willing population, but one that is very poor because for many years the Indian reservations (of which there are many) had no income except welfare from the federal government. Now a lot of casino money is flowing back into the tribes, so they actually have decent housing and I think have higher goals.

There are some pueblos that still have Franciscans or other orders, but a lot of the pueblo children elsewhere are just bussed to the local school (it’s not necessarily close, they’re just in that district).

There’s no way the state should lower the standards.

I remember my New Mexico High School class was the first one to graduate under toughened standards in 1990. New Mexico is going backwards.

If the standards become any more relaxed...let’s just call it *daycare* instead of school.

The excellence vs. general is the standard in most areas. The excellence one looks like the extra math and science classes college bound students need.

However, letting schools set their own passing grades is a bit of an eye brow raiser. Let’s make 25 a passing grade!

There was a place in Miss/Ala where they were going to have lower passing grades for blacks and not for whites.

Maybe it would make sense to eliminate the whole concept of “graduation.” Instead, schools could simply issue a transcript showing the classes the student completed, and his grades. Prospective employers or colleges could have published standards, and the students could tailor their course loads to reach the goals they set for themselves.

Well, when the students start having trouble meeting the "Excellence" standard, I suppose we'll reduce that to "Pretty Darned Good".

Soon it will be if they can walk and breath they will pass.

If they can walk, breath and chew gum at the same time they will placed on the honor role.

It hasn’t changed.

A bit player in the “Billy the Kid” legend. I never have read his book; I wonder if it’s in my local library.

Those kids can have a rewarding career as meth dealers.

I hear there was a recent opening in NM from a guy that decided to call it quits.

This is NOT the NM schools I went to back in the early 1960s! Those schools were good! Artesia, Clayton, Tatum, Carlsbad.

He also wrote THE FAIR GOD which I read back about 1964. It was supposed to be made into a movie but was never done.

They should have a third level of diploma for those who can’t manage to get the “general” diploma. Call it the “Democrat” diploma. Don’t want anyone to feel bad.

“Ben-Hur” is in our county library. “The Fair God” isn’t.
