Black Labor Force Participation Rate Under Obama Hits Rock Bottom--Lowest Level Ever Recorded

Five years in to Barack Obama’s presidency, the number of African-Americans participating in the labor force has hit rock bottom.

The news media has ignored this stunning revelation from Friday’s monthly jobs report by the Labor Department.

The exception has been PBS, which interviewed economist Dean Baker who had written about it in a report published Friday.

“The drop in labor force participation was sharpest for African Americans, who saw a decline of 0.3 percentage points to 60.2 percent, the lowest rate since December of 1977. The rate for African American men fell 0.7 percentage points to 65.6 percent, the lowest on record. The decline in labor force participation was associated with a drop in the overall African American unemployment rate of 0.5 percentage points to 11.9, and a drop of 0.6 percentage points to 11.6 percent for African American men.”

Baker, Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, told PBS’s Judy Woodruff Friday that contrary to those who spin the falling labor force participation rate as mainly coming from retiring Baby Boomers, young workers are dropping out by the millions.

“…it is easy to see the big falloff in labor force participation is among prime age workers, 25-to-54-years-olds. That is down by four full percentage points. That is equivalent to five million people in their prime ages. They are not retiring at age 50.”

The White House fed black media the news that black unemployment was down five points from its 2010 high of 16.9% but did not say that this was largely the result of more African-Americans giving up on finding jobs in the Obama economy.

While black support for Obama is over 80%, some in the African-American community put their desire for a job ahead of their pride in the first black president in the 2012 election. According to Pew Research, 19% of young black men voted for Republican Mitt Romney—a loss of 14% for Obama from 2008.

Economist Walter Williams put black labor force participation in historical context in a column published last April by pointing out that up until the 1960s blacks were as well or better represented in the labor force than whites.

“From 1900 to 1954, blacks were more active than whites in the labor market. Until about 1960, black male labor force participation in every age group was equal to or greater than that of whites. During that period, black teen unemployment was roughly equal to or less than white teen unemployment. As early as 1900, the duration of black unemployment was 15 percent shorter than that of whites; today it’s about 30 percent longer.”

What happened after that? Liberalism–and now Obama.

And yet 95 percent of Black Protestants voted for Obama.

Are you saying that Black Roman Catholics did not vote for BHO in the same proportions as Black Protestants?

That’s the AA way. Government rules, regulations, directives, guidelines, and advisories dictate excellence.

Never mind if that excellence happens to be in the wrong direction.

Why work? Just let others work and the government will take the fruits of their labors and distribute it to us.

Exactly.

What he has done is praiseworthy in many circles including some white relatives of mine.

To some, work is for suckers. Obama has created an environment where the "American (slacker's) dream" is in reach for more people. I am sure that was his goal.

The message of the civl rights movement was that black men who worked at menial jobs were suckers. Never mind that for these black men, the problem was that they could not advance in such jobs, like their white colleagues. They were happy to get their chance to work themselves up the ladder. The young “bucks” in the civil rights movement, however, expected have good jobs created for them, or lacking them, to be supported in their idleness.

and why should the African-American labor participation rate NOT decline, when by virtue of the declared Messiah of the Progressive Socialists the federal government will more than ever provide for everyone, whether they work or not, by expanding every form of subsidy in life to the point where many can “get more” from the subsidies than from work

but is not that always been the intent of the white Liberals - the “government plantation society”

It isn't rocket science. Blacks are being replaced in the workforce by invaders who are mostly not black. Blacks are being bought off with cell phones, food stamps, rent subsidies, and now free health insurance. The blacks who do move up mostly move out, leaving the population that remains to fester, with their potential leaders serving as minority participants in the ruling class.

It could not have been done so completely if those that decide things hadn't groomed an Indonesian (or whatever) with an American born mother to pretend he is an American black and thus everything Obama has done to blacks to further degrade their culture and potential does not diminish their support for him.

And white liberals? Forget it. I had seven years time served in inner city schools, often in fragile neighborhoods. I can't even discuss with my liberal friends the imposed problems minority students face in their schools and neighborhoods. They think the purpose of the handouts is to help blacks get ahead.

How are these workplace participation numbers not compelling? The only way to start solving the problem is to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US for US citizens and send home and keep out of the US invaders and other substitute labor.

When are blacks going to realize they've been written off?

Credit 50 years of LBJ’s “War on Poverty” for making more poor than we’ve ever had in this country. Surely even the lowest information voters ought to catch on after five years of Obumbles that their situation is much worse than before he came to office. A half-black skin can’t cover up such gross mismanagement of the economy.

I suppose you found you numbers from the Pew Research Poll, which only characterizes Black as Protestants. Since the poll lacked racial components for other religions, why not use a poll that lacks a religious component?

The black underclass can’t and never will. Someone, some group other than themselves has to be blamed. Evil, white racism has always been the answer for progressives. But most people have caught on. Nobody but diehard racialists believe the race-pimps like Jackson and Sharpton anymore. The black underclass is the cancer of the nation that must be excised for the rest of black America and the rest of the country to survive.
