Porsche is really taking its game to the next level.
The 60-story Porsche Design Tower, now underway in Miami, will contain three elevators capable of taking residents and their cars to their multimillion-dollar condos dozens of stories up. The building has 284 parking spaces in its glass "sky garages," where the cars will be visible to owners from within their condos.
The amenity is so enticing that the building has managed to sign up 2 percent of the world's billionaires, according to the Atlantic Cities.
Not many units remain, a broker tells Yahoo, even though prices start at a heady $4 million and top out at a vertiginous $32.5 million for the "huge" penthouse.
Asked about the cars, the broker said: “Bentleys, Porsches, Ferraris, Rolls Royce -- so many cars I’m just amazed.” One resident is reportedly bringing with him a $25 million Ferrari.

At that dollar level I’m sure they get to decorate it almost any way they like. Especially since it is condos, not apartments. Maybe the management would draw the line at a petting zoo of baby tigers, but seriously, interior design would be the smallest of my concerns if I had the wallet and the wish to go opulent.

It’s specifically designed to sink into the ground ahead of a hurricane to avoid the winds. There’s isn’t any real bedrock in Miami, so the self-retracting building concept will work real well. Getting it out of the sand and back up in the air, is another problem. But they’re working on it.

Seriously. It’s doing SOME good to have them over there. It’s a humility lesson for terrorists, even if not making all that big a dent in the prospective terrorism candidates.

Towers near the beachfront are nothing new, right? I doubt that the architects would deliberately go chintzy on footing pilings. Or that city and state building codes would allow anything too foolish.
This is capitalism. And a grand capitalism it is. Please please sir, bring me as many zillionaires in my back yard as you can. Because then my business of selling deluxe widgets to zillionaires will take off like a rocket!

I was involved with a 15 story hotel project in Fort Lauderdale about 30 years ago as a young engineer. The structural engineer drove about a zillion piles that were 30’-40’ long. A typical column would get a 3x3 array of precast concrete and steel piles, that would get tied together at grade with a concrete pile cap, and then the building column would go up from there. The piles were basically about getting enough friction shear to support the building.
There’s no bedrock to be found.
At that price tag I doubt it will be occupied by the tenement set, however. I’ve lived in many an apartment without feeling “overcrowded by humanity.”

I have to give that an emphatic “maybe.”
Wars are messy, costly things. They also do make a point. I think it’s a drawback that we don’t have a conquest plan. Maybe the US should just sit tight until a situation does call for a conquest, then go conquer. After all, the third verse of the National Anthem doesn’t go, “Then police we must, when our cause it is just.”

Not all glass is garden variety window glass.
Suitable architectural engineering would help mitigate the issue. The devil is in the details here.
