Ohio killer's execution takes almost 25 minutes

A condemned man appeared to gasp several times and took an unusually long time to die - more than 20 minutes - in an execution carried out Thursday with a combination of drugs never before tried in the U.S.

Dennis McGuire's attorney Allen Bohnert called the convicted killer's death "a failed, agonizing experiment" and added: "The people of the state of Ohio should be appalled at what was done here today in their names."

I kinda liked Florida’s Old Sparky. I thought smoking hair was a nice deterrent.

I wonder what is causing all the problems.

When I had my gaul bladder removed, the anesthesiologist was speaking to me and I went out in mid sentence.

Anything they did after that I would have never known.

Can’t they just knock them out and use the Russian method of a bullet to the back of the head?

Better to do contortions like this than a bullet behind the ear.

So there were three men waiting to die on the Guillotine. The first was a priest and he was asked whether he wanted to die looking up or down. He said up, looking towards heaven. So he laid down and the blade came down and stopped just short of his neck. The executioner said, wow, hand of God, you can go. The next man, a bum and a drunk said he would look up like the priest and the blade again stopped just short of his neck. He too was allowed to leave. The third man, an engineer, said before he went to lie down, “I think I know how to fix that for you.”

How long did that poor young pregnant mom suffer being horribly raped and essentially guillotined?

25 minutes? He should have suffered a lot longer than that.

As I understand it, you don’t have to face the death penalty at all if you don’t want to.

Don’t do the crime. Let these innocent women life and you can live.

ACLU, Lefty idiots,... educate your ranks.

Most likely he was dead and it was his body reacting.

Boo-freakin’-hoo. This piece of garbage was alive for the 24 years prior to his execution, unlike his victims.

I'm convinced that we got rid of all of the quick, humane, efficient methods because the Anti-Death Penalty freaks insisted on it.

Now we slowly strap people to tables, we ready the medical equipment, we search endlessly for useable veins, we slowly inject this chemical, then we slowly inject this other chemical. And, since we have to choose chemicals with no side effects, they do not work all that well, so the patient gasps and spasms and takes 24 minutes to die.

And THAT allows the Anti-Death Penalty freaks to stand up and say, "You monsters!"

Death penalty in Washington state allows the condemned to choose lethal injection or hanging.

I think there are still a couple gallows maintained also.

I don’t get it either but pentobarbital’s maker refuses to allow it to be used for executions. I didn’t think they could do that.

What’s wrong with hanging?

I understand that, if you don't get the drop JUST RIGHT, heads come off. And drawers fill with poop. Not sure where I heard these things…just some of the detritus stuffed in the recesses of the cranium over the decades.

Yep. 25 years (1989-2014, not 25 minutes.

So this POS raped and murdered a woman who probably died in a state of abject terror, but we’re supposed to shed tears that he had a few uncomfy moments when he died?

He got off easy. My vote would have been to put him a vat of boiling oil.

Hadn’t thought about this much, but I think Judy is onto something. The State should not indulge the emotion attendant to the circumstances, but make a way for efficient, yet respectful way of transferring this person from the present life into the life to come where there will be no more pain or death. Self-control and discipline should attend an execution as a way of testifying to proper conduct as opposed to the conduct of the offender.

It is tempting to pick up a baseball bat, yes. But together we seek a means more respectful, because in wielding the sword of justice there is also honor. There is also something to be said for mercy even while imparting death.

Perhaps some choices ought to be made available. In the end, however, it seems appropriate to anesthetize and then go a step further.

Slow descent, feet first, into a people shredder, just like Saddam’s kids used to play with.
