U.S. states could turn to firing squads if execution drugs scarce
Yahoo News ^ | Jan 18, 2014 | Kevin Murphy

Lawmakers for at least two U.S. states say they should conduct executions by firing squad if opposition to capital punishment by pharmaceutical companies makes it hard to obtain drugs for lethal injections.

States have turned to pharmacies that customize drugs and adopted untested new mixes after supplies of traditional execution drugs were cut off by manufacturers opposed to their use for the procedure.

The debate over lethal injections was reignited on Thursday when an inmate gasped and convulsed violently during his execution in Ohio as the state used a two-drug method for the first time in the United States.

Nitrogen gas is in plentiful supply, and you don’t need the permission of a pharmaceutical company to get it. And nitrogen asphyxiation is completely painless.

I think the public part is integral to the effectiveness of hanging as a deterrent.

All that aside, Lois Lerner should be executed for her crimes against the Republic.

She is the worst political criminal in American History

Hang em. John Wayne said in a movie once about hanging. I forget the exact words. I think “grizzly” was in the statement. But, something along those lines gets peoples attention. Just laying on a table and going to sleep is nothing like suddenly feeling the floor drop out from under you and knowing in the next flick of light you are dead.

I am by no means anti-death penalty, but I have an issue when the death penalty is applied for crimes that didn’t result in a murder.

Which begs the question

What purpose does the death penalty serve...?

1. To exact an eye for an eye type of punishment ?
2. Rid society of vermin that don't deserve to breathe same air as us...like rapists and child molesters...

I would tend to be on your side of the argument as long as rapist and child molesters served long and hard prison terms...

Nor hanging, nor firing squad or the sword, the end result will still be the same

All executions should be available for public viewing...sends a message...

Why spend taxpayer money on consumables like bullets or drugs?

The Chinese keep it simple. They fire a bullet at point blank range into the back of the brain of the condemned and then bill his family for the cost of the bullet.

I find it amazing that people haven’t gone with an obvious solution. I read about this method a long time ago.

You use a gas chamber where the gas is pure nitrogen. The condemned would just eventually nod off and die. No muss, no fuss. Nitrogen is also plenty cheap.

The only reason asphyxiation is unpleasant in a confined space is that your body reacts negatively to high concentrations of CO2. You body is utterly indifferent to nitrogen since most of the atmosphere is already composed of it.

Now I imagine this wouldn’t satisfy the more bloodthirsty types who want the scum to suffer, but personally I don’t give a damn if they suffer or not. I want their oxygen consumption over and have them placed on the correct side of the grass. The nitrogen method would have the advantage of being quite peaceful and mild, and thus there wouldn’t be harsh images to be used as propaganda for the anti-capital punishment side.

I’ve heard people that try to kill themselves with CO poisoning i.e. turn the car on and sit in the garage, and are revived say it is not unpleasant at all.

My first reaction to this headline is that in the not too distant future, the State will execute Tea Party members by firing squad; the Tea Party having been by then deemed a terrorist group.

The shortage of such drugs is artificial, as a result of liberal pressure on drug companies, and (I don’t doubt) subtle pressure from bureaucrats in league with the anti-death-penalty movement.

But there really is no shortage. It is easy to administer a lethal does of ordinary, humane anesthesia — drugs which many of us have experienced ourselves in surgery.

I am NOT in favor of public executions. But I am in favor of speedy justice. There is no reason why an unsuccessful, frivolous appeal should take 15 years to adjudicate. This makes a total joke of any justice.

Always remember that one of the primary reasons for a justice system, going back to the time of Noah, was to deter revenge killings and perpetual vendettas. We are very close to the stage where the only justice in some of these case is familial revenge.

The advantage of letting the state take over the revenge function is to relieve the victims of an onerous act which could cause them still more grief, and harm social order.

Letting condemned criminals have family, friends, and confused supporters watch is silly. They should have no rights to be present.

The Constitution says that punishments should not be cruel and unusual. There was nothing unusual about capital punishment in the 18th Century, or all through history. It is not cruel unless intentionally causing excessive pain. A few reflex movements by the corpse do not indicate pain. If this offends some people, then they should allow use of the better drugs, which they have intentionally been blocking.

I have been present for the euthanasia of a beloved pet. It was so gentle, that it was difficult to tell when the animal had actually expired. There are easy drugs available. Some are even “recreational,” and are probably on the list of those to be made legal when the marijuana movement really gets going.

Revenge is a legitimate response at some times. It is exercised to punish, and to eliminate a PROVEN THREAT. It is reasonable to make revenge a function of disinterested courts. Courts are commanded in the Bible, just for this reason.

Eliminating capital punishment does not solve any problem, but just leaves justice up in the air. It is a very dangerous illusion to suppose that this would be progress.

The only people democrats want to execute are Tea Party members... Remember, criminals are a major part of the Democrat base.

While firing squad executions are a good alternative, what is really needed is for there to be conservatives as chairmen of the senate and house judiciary committees.

They could end the nit-picking against the death penalty by federal judges, by declaring states to be “competent authorities” to carry out executions in any manner as they see fit.

Probably half or more of the delays of death penalties are encouraged by federal judges personally opposed to the death penalty, who give lawyers and their murderers copious amounts of time to hear endless appeals, over what amounts to petty nonsense.

By stripping the federal judiciary of this ability, it would significantly streamline the appeals process, so that vicious murderers get their just desserts in an expeditious, but fair, manner.

Yeah - I’m for this. There should be nothign “humane” given to those that have committed violent acts against another human being that resulted in the death penalty. Aside from wrongful prosecutions agruments - staring down the barrels of multiple rifles may persuade some not to commit crimes at all...if it doesn’t - what a last minute shock to their senses!
