Two Iranian warships set sail Tuesday for the Atlantic Ocean on their navy's first-ever mission there, state TV reported.
The voyage comes amid an ongoing push by Iran to demonstrate the ability to project power across the Middle East and beyond.
The report said that the destroyer Sabalan and the logistic helicopter carrier Khark will be dispatched on a three-month voyage.
"The warships will have task of securing shipping routes as well as training new personnel," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Iran's navy chief Admiral Habibollah Sayyari as saying.

The Iranian ship Kharg is a modified Ol-class replenishment oiler of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy, named after Kharg Island. Built at Swan Hunter in the United Kingdom and launched in 1977, she was delivered to Iran in 1984.
Kharg entered the Suez Canal on 22 February 2011, with the frigate Alvand, on a deployment reported to be a training mission to Latakia, Syria.
The Kharg entered the Suez Canal again, with one other warship on 18 February 2012, after briefly docking at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The main thing to fear is this old ship could hold a hidden medium range rocket that if close enough to our shore, say in the Gulf of Mexico south of Galveston, it could launch a nuke EMP electromagnetic pulse weapon (that could not be intercepted) set to explode about 300 miles over Kansas and would put most of the center of the US back in the stone age for many, many months if not years.
The Obamanation would be so pleased because we would not then have to worry about Global Warming or Obamacare as a hundred million or so would die from starvation or medical problems within six weeks.
Iran is already at war with us and our President is on their side! God help us, Obama won't--
Looks like a ship. Certainly these ingenious muslims could have designed something so much more perfect for parting the seas.
