ASU fraternity suspended after 'offensive' MLK party

TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) - A representative for Arizona State University said school officials have suspended Tau Kappa Epsilon's chapter operations while they investigate an unregistered Greek event that has many on campus offended

Pictures from the event, coined "MLK Black Party" by the group, show members and guests dressed in basketball jerseys, flashing gang signs and even drinking from watermelon cups.

"This isn't appropriate at all and you really have no business dressing like this on a day that's sort of revered for African-Americans," said ASU senior Frank Hogan after seeing some of the pictures.

"I think this represents the ignorance that still exists today. This is just one example of the kind of things that occur here," stated Kaajal Koranteng, also a senior.

An official statement from the university said ASU has suspended the chapter's operations and will take "additional action against the individuals involved."

This happens every year. Some college party - some where.

Ahhh. Nothing says "Lets celebrate Martin Luther King Day" like some silly white kids acting ghetto.

And yet nobody says a thing about the other 364 days of the year when some idiots with racial identity issues act like this.

But it’s ok on Saint Patrick’s Day for people to wear a green hat, shamrock shaped glasses, and drink green beer?

Lighten up. They’re young and not yet constrained by PC.

Ditto that.

Ever since Obama came on the scene, everybody is offended over every little word and deed. I think we should have a national "let's offend someone day."

When I was a young man, my two best friends were a Jewish kid named Michael and a Hispanic kid named Ricardo. We called each other Mike the K*ke, I was "Chief" (Native American background) and Ricardo was "Rick the Sp*c." We welcomed a black kid to our group by buying and sharing a KFC bucket.

His only comment (outside of genuinely appreciating the gesture) was "dammit, where's the watermelon?"

We all got along better before the PC crowd came along and decided they needed to divide us

Some people are just too thin-skinned. It was stupid and in poor taste yes, but suspend the fraternity?

They are smart enough to have learned how to play the game. Plus I am really done with white kids trying to be “black”. So done.

If you actually analyze the photos in that video, there is really nothing there. If the people in the pics were slightly of color, nothing. Nada. I would like to read a detailed analysis of what was wrong about those pics.

Is it now illegal to drink out of a watermelon rind? What about wear NBA jerseys and hats and make gang hand signals? What if they had worn hoodies with the hoods up, would that have been a felony? With Skittles in their pockets? Oh, the humanity!

Wow; I can say with much confidence that NEVER happened when I was in college. Unless said girls intended to pour the beer out on my head. I got used to it after a while.

The chapter was already in trouble, and had just gotten off suspension in December (I read this in another story). They were still on “social suspension,” which means they weren’t supposed to be having a party, which doesn’t make sense to me because how are they supposed to Rush without parties?

(Disclosure: This was my Frat in college, different chapter in MI. I was surprised to hear ASU still had one.)

When I first hear this story this morning, my initial reaction was “SAE in dutch again?” Was just a little surprised to hear it was the Tekes. Sigh.

Arizona State is a government school. It has some pretty serious 1st Amendment issues if it takes action against the bunch.

Westboro Baptist Church has the Constitutional right to picket and yell all sorts of vile stuff during the funeral of a soldier killed in battle. These guys may be stupid and obnoxious, but the state cannot sanction them for that.
