Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act has Wicker, Cochran Support

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Thad Cochran, R-Miss., are backing legislation that would allow persons with state-issued conceal carry permits to use them in other states with conceal carry laws.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2014 (S.1908) is intended to defend the Second Amendment rights of individuals with conceal carry permits, allowing them to carry those privileges from their home state to other states that also have conceal carry laws.

“I am strongly committed to upholding Americans’ constitutional right to keep and bear arms,” Wicker said. “This legislation would ensure this right is not limited to the state where the concealed carry permit was issued. It responsibly grants legal gun owners the same freedom in states with concealed carry laws.”

“Second amendment rights shouldn’t stop at the state line,” Cochran said. “It makes sense to allow law-abiding gun owners to take their concealed permit privileges with them to states that also allow conceal carry permits.”

While extending concealed carry privileges, the legislation recognizes state’s rights and does not provide for a national concealed carry permit.

Wicker and Cochran, both members of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, were among 57 Senators who earlier this year voted in favor of an amendment comparable to this legislation. In addition, the Mississippi Senators cosponsored similar legislation in the 112th Congress.

S.1908 was introduced by Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) and is also cosponsored by Senators Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Mike Johanns (R-Neb.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), John Thune (R-S.D.), Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and David Vitter (R-La.). The measure has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Good luck with places like California. They don’t currently recognize ANY other state’s CCW permits. It would be great to force them to do so. As for NYC and Chicago, their heads will explode there.

Prediction: either a) the prison states will never abide this, and/or b) the FedGov will use this to put unforseen limits on concealed carry and the ownership of arms. The FedGov screws up everything it touches.

It would be better to let the states work among themselves.

Cochran needs some right wing support to get reelected since his voting record of the last several years has been one of the poorest with respect to conservatism. Wicker’s son in law is in charge of Cochran’s reelection campaign and gun rights is a good way to garner support. I like the issue but the timing and Senators are suspect for the real reasons for bringing this forth at this time.

"It would be better to let the states work among themselves."

My reading of the full faith and credit clause would seem to suggest congress actually has some input on this. My reading of the second amendment suggests they don't.

My Florida permit is good anywhere I go except California /spit. But I would welcome more reciprocity as longs as no strings are attached.

Strings will be attached. Sigh.

There are some possibilities here besides that.

Trying to do what is basically a “federal” function out of the actual Federal government’s bailiwick would be a duplication of effort.

But Washington does not need to load it down with regulations. Some kind of clearinghouse would be sufficient.

Getting Washington to affirm firearms freedom is, on total, a boon.

It’s not a question of bearing arms, it’s HOW arms are borne.

And yet, when cynicism becomes the highest principle, one gets the distinct perception that the Lord has been shut out of the picture. How about stopping this asinine game of playing chess with the world, and just go straight for the grace of God. If it’s good, accept it.

Well that part isn’t to try to exercise more “vision” than God has! That sounds like an excuse. God makes it very simple. Every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights.

I have a Florida and a Cali permit and there are still a few states that aren't covered.

“And because of this no other state recognizes cali CCWs either.”

I am afraid that you have been misinformed. A great many other states recognize the California CCW permit.

According to this site, there are about 20 states that recognize the California permit:

Same with Cornyn. He's running hard to the right.

Doesn't matter, I'm voting against him in the primary.
