Raiders cheerleader sues, says pay is less than $5 an hour
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 1/22/14 | Bob Egelko

Lacy T. accused the Raiders in a lawsuit Wednesday of failing to pay the Raiderettes minimum wages for the work they do, both on the sidelines and in the community for charity. The team also sticks them with travel costs and levies "fines" that eat into their meager salary, she said.

She filed her lawsuit in Alameda County Superior Court as a proposed class action on behalf of 40 current Raiderettes and other members of the squad over the past four years. And she said she hopes other NFL cheerleaders will join the fray.

There are a lot of things that require a huge amount of time and effort on the promise of eventual return. In the case of a cheerleader the only eventual return is a slim chance at something bigger. (Offhand I can only think of Paula Abdul as an example)

Medical students with hopes of becoming doctors are a good example of people who put in years of very high pressure time on the hope of eventual return and its a good thing. Its how they weed out those who will likely be bad doctors.

Yet they went through all kinds of competition to get the job. Dumbasses.

LOL! My thoughts exactly!

Basically they are interns.

No, basically they're exhibitionists who enjoy parading around in faux support of some football team. I know some Freepers must get their jollies watching them, but what's the purpose, folks? Other sports get along just fine without this Harry High School crap.

Let’s face it, their only purpose is to serve as jiggly decorations. While there are some demands on their appearance, it isn’t like they have to have some extraordinary skills that aren’t available in a thousand other applicants. The fact that they’re paid at all is a bonus.

If this suit succeeds, fire the whole bunch and select a squad of (good-looking) volunteers who will shake their groove thangs for the sheer “team spirit.”

Basically they are interns.

Apprenticeships are bad, but internships are good, especially internships for politicians. And, oh yeah, it's evil to pay people less than the minimum wage.

Income equality.

Everyone should make $5.00 an hour.

Does 3+3=5 for small values of 3?
I’m just trying to understand how this works. I totally do NOT understand the new math, people keep talking about things like “300% reductions”, “5000 times smaller” etc. and I have no idea what they are trying to say. Is it Greek math or Chinese math? In the mid-twentieth century on the planet Earth from whence I came those terms had no meaning.

Minor league players only earn $1,100 a month to start.

Whether the law was actually broken depends on how one counts the hours. That is the soul of this dispute - do all of the hours count as on-clock time or not?

I suppose there may be a bit of salary versus hourly wages in the mix, as well.

3+3=5 only for VERY small values of 3.

“Minor league players only earn $1,100 a month to start.”

That sounds way too low. Are you sure, it’s that low?

The comments in this thread are overwhelmingly unsympathetic and judgmental. I suppose we could debate the merits of the minimum wage laws. Do you think they should only apply to fully-clothed women? What’s the difference between putting this kind of moral gloss on laws versus sharia?

Ballplayers in the low minors do earn astonishingly piddly sums.

The team down the road for me is always scrambling for host families to let a player crash with them rent-free during the season.

That’s why they have so many Dominicans. It’s better money than they can earn back home. American kids can make more at Home Depot.

Personally I think all these NFL cheerleaders are underpaid.
I was stunned to learn how little the Dallas Cowgirls made when the team is selling their image on posters and merchandise all over the planet.

opps! I was wrong, they only get $850 a month.

http://nationalsportsandentertainment.wordpress.com/2010/03/17/pay-structure-of-minor-league-baseball-players/

I would compare an elementary inner city public school teacher to a minor league baseball player.

On the other hand, a world class college professor (comparable to a pro athelete) can earn millions. Here is a list of some of the highest paid college professors.
