Ukraine unrest: Protesters storm regional offices

Anti-government demonstrators in Ukraine are expanding their protests after talks between the opposition and President Viktor Yanukovych stalled.

In western Ukraine, the activists seized the regional government office in the city of Ivano-Frankivsk and are storming another one in Chernivtsi.

Protests were reported in Lutsk, in the north-west, and Sumy, in the east.

Meanwhile, Mr Yanukovych vowed to use "all legal means" if a solution to the crisis is not found.

At a meeting with religious leaders, he also promised to amend anti-protests laws rushed through parliament last week and reshuffle the government at an urgent session of parliament due to begin on Tuesday. ...

The crisis escalated this week when the first deaths in the unrest happened.

Two protesters were shot during rioting on Hrushevskyy Street near the Maidan. The opposition says they were killed by riot police or snipers - the government denies the claim.

And an activist was found dead in woods near Kiev after apparently being abducted, tortured and left to die in the snow.

Country was about to join the EU, but then Putin intervened and leaders are poised to join it up with Russia again. Opponents seem to be executing a well-orchestrated revolt. Neither side are particularly “good”.

Last night I saw a YouTube video of the protests. It looked like the protesters were firing some kind of missiles at government buildings. Then this morning I saw a picture in the paper of a protester with an armload of 4th of July-style skyrockets. Probably Chinese-made. Worth keeping in mind. We may need to copy that some day soon.

They’re calling for
-the “president” and his government to resign,
-to disband the special police forces (Berkut) who killed 3 people earlier in the week
-arrest of the officers responsible for the deaths of these 3

This had been a peaceful protest for two months, but no, they started to kidnap and beat journalists (ex. Chornovol, Lutsenko) then started to beat the regular people, then last week they passed laws disallowing right to protest (you now need approval from the government to do that) and right to free speech and press (you criticize the government, you’re an “extremist”, 6 year prison term for you)

Finally they killed three people on Tuesday, when they had a police crackdown. Two were shot. The other one was taken from a hospital, beaten to death and dumped outside the city.

That’s about it, welcome to Ukraine

Water cannons would put a stop to that riot.

Have you seen any international media, other than The Beeb, reporting on the revolt?

Is anyone else there besides these players?

Reports of troops or police in further crackdowns?

Yanuconvict already tried water cannons against the protestors. It didn’t work.

It’s supposed to be -6 tonight there. That’s a pretty good discouragement.
