Gun firms’ ‘microstamping’ protests are ‘baloney,’ law’s author says (California)

Gun makers’ objections to a California law that requires firearms to imprint a unique “microstamp” on bullet casings are “baloney” and “posturing,” said Los Angeles City Atty. Mike Feuer, who introduced the legislation while serving in the state Assembly.

Feuer’s comments come as gun maker Smith & Wesson announced Thursday that it would stop selling newly designed semiautomatic pistols in California because it will not comply with the law, implemented in May 2013.

The law requires some firearms to imprint a unique “microstamp” to help identify bullet casings. It is intended to help police investigators link shell casings found at crime scenes to a specific gun.

Smith & Wesson joins gun maker Sturm, Ruger & Co. in halting the sales. Both companies criticized the microstamping requirement as costly, unreliable and ineffective, saying that there is no evidence that it will help solve crimes. …

I read somewhere that a .22 LR revolver was the weapon of choice for assassins.

Uh, wasn’t that what Michael Corleone used to take out Sollazzo and McCloskey?

Makes sense to me.

I remember an episode of “Perry Mason” where he solves the crime by demonstrating how easy it is to exchange the barrels of a Colt .25 Auto.

The model 1911 is extremely easy to strip and remove the firing pin and barrel. Not so sure of other types tho. Anyway if I wanted to exchange them, the .45 auto is not exactly hard to find.

my company is reaffirming its decision to not sell to the state of California or any law enforcement or government agencies there.

Thank you, friend.

I was a juror on a case where the hit weapon was a .22 Ruger with a catch bag for the brass and a large silencer. Easy fix; the bag was home made.

I have no personal knowledge but have read that at one time both the Mafia and Israeli intelligence agencies used the Beretta model 70 for killing. It is a light, handy and totally reliable automatic.

It is chambered for the .22LR.

Yup, a little knowledge and skill, a few spare parts that disappear and your gun no longer matches the evidence. Just make sure that you only handle the rounds with gloves. Of course this would be seen as premeditated.

Big companies don't posture they make business decisions.

A concept that's foreign to a politician.

I'm pretty sure Mickey was using a .38 snub nose not a .22

Why does this moron CARE? It means that no more S&W's will be sold in California. You would think he would be happy about that. Talk about liberals being completely clueless.

I want to see Mike Feuer’s (the author of the law) engineering degree, years experience in the field, and professional licenses.

Even then, he is speaking as and advocate, not a technical expert.

Conservatives protest Government. Leftists protest reality.
