Challenger to John Cornyn Brings NDAA Controversy into Texas Race
breitbart.com ^ | 1/25/14 | Brandon Darby

Dwayne Stovall, a Tea Party candidate challenging Senator John Cornyn for his seat in the United States Senate, has brought the controversial aspects of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into the primary race.

Stovall is not alone in challenging Senator Cornyn in the primary; U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman is also in the primary, but his chances have been severely damaged by the candidate's decision to remain quiet in light of numerous ethics and financial questions.

Breitbart News has provided our readers with the first look into the Stovall campaign press release, sent to us on January 25, 2014.

The headline invoked Stovall’s shared stance with U.S. Senator Ted Cruz against the fast-tracking of the NDAA vote. It asserted, “Dwayne Stovall Opposes John Cornyn and Stands with Ted Cruz Against Fast-Tracked NDAA Vote.”

Tea Party-endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate, Dwayne Stovall, vigorously opposes the NDAA legislation recently fast-tracked through the Senate and passed with Sen. John Cornyn's approval. The 493-page legislation embodies much of what is wrong with the federal government and highlights the reason that John Cornyn frequently gets it wrong for Texas.

In a statement, Stovall said:

Why is it in the best interest of Texas to hand more power to an administration already hostile to conservatives? When the IRS is used to target Texas conservatives, as Sen. Cornyn well knows because he sits on the IRS oversight committee, there is no reason to hand this administration more ability to target patriotic, law-abiding Texans. Prior to his vote to pass the NDAA, Sen. Cornyn voted that he didn't want debate to end, but that effort failed. Rather than continue to oppose a bill that he felt needed more debate as Sen. Cruz did, Sen. Cornyn voted for this very bill, which greatly expanded government powers...

I’m planning on voting anyone but Cornyn.

Let’s call it: “ABC!” (Anybody but Cornyn)!

The article strangely does not mention the worst part of this act: unlimited detention of American citizens with no due process.

Good point!

Nothing heard. I called last Thursday as follow up. Again, staff said they had no answer because they are busy but they assured me they would answer as soon as they can. I can’t understand why the delay other than they truly are busy, that or they are trying to figure out a politically ‘soft’ response (though that is less likely as Cruz is anything but ‘soft’ when it comes to politics. . .and I respect him for that).

As far as ‘Da Judge is concerned, nothing. Nothing at all. . .

Will let you know as soon as I hear something.

From the git go, I said I would NOT be voting for my Congressman, Steve Stockman, in this race. He has way too much baggage. The front page of the Beaumont Enterprise has hit him the last two Sundays. This week’s front-age headline: “Where is Stockman?” Challenging all his Congressional absences and the votes he’s missed. I’d love to see Linda Vega or Dwayne Stovall take on Cornhole in the Primary run-off. If Stockman is Cornhole’s run-off opponent, Stockman will lose. Take it from this Texan who has known Stockman since 1994 and I’m supporting Linda Vega.

“I’d love to see Linda Vega or Dwayne Stovall take on Cornhole in the Primary run-off”

I do daily searches on the Texas race and never see many stories on either Vega or Stovall.

What’s the feel in Texas? Are these two traveling around and making news? Do you think there will be a runoff?

Stockman has always been “strange”. I remember a radio interview with him on KLVI Talk Radio in Beaumont, TX when he was Congressman the first time. I swear, I, and many others, was convinced he was drunk during that interview.

Yes; there will be a run-off. Conservatives turn out big-time in the Primaries down here.

“Yes; there will be a run-off. Conservatives turn out big-time in the Primaries down here.”

Then if you’re right, that’ll be a strong message in itself, that the minority whip, the second highest republican official in the senate, failed to get 50% of the vote in a republican state.

That’s what I want to happen. Cornyn’s primary is the first one and I’d love to see a snowball effect, with poor Lamar Alexander at the end of it, and one worthless incumbent mowed down after another. It will halt Amnesty, Boehner will likely announce his retirement, and the democrats would be stalled as both moderate republicans and democrats would be scared to death to vote for liberal ideas. Only those that are safe till 2016 or 2018 will vote with Reid and Schumer.

Yes; there will be a run-off.

***********

Have you seen any polls, local or otherwise lately. I find nothing on the net that
indicates any have been taken. I know sometimes campaigns take polls that aren’t
released to the public.

Cornyn won both the 08 and 02 primaries easily. I’m not sure how it will stack
up this time as I don’t see a lot of state news. Excepting Stockman whose political
activity has been local to SETX I don’t think any of his opponents have any
statewide recognition or funding.

Never the less early voting begins in 22 days so in essence opponents
don’t have much time to make an impact, imo.

I have never heard of Dwayne Stovall but I am listening. I was planning on voting for Stockman but maybe Stovall is better. Anybody but Coryn.

Stockman has baggage, but he is very aggressive against Obamacare, refused to vote for Boehner as Speaker and has called for Obama’s impeachment.

Stovall is very conservative and doesn’t have the baggage problem. That said, I would gladly vote for either of them over Cornyn.

First of all, in ‘02 and ‘08, he had no formidable challenger and we did not have ObamaCare. Also, in the beginning, he was “Conservative”, but now, Washington has gotten to him and he has become a “John McCain Conservative”. I’ve seen no polls, but I have seen Cornhole running scared and the people of Texas, who vote in Primary Elections, are mad as hell. Plus, you have a female running, in the Primary, with a Hispanic surname. That served Ted Cruz well and it will do the same for Linda Vega.

No, Gresham wasn’t on KLVI in the 90s. Best I can remember, it was Jack Piper’s show.
