The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say 281 passengers have fallen ill aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

The CDC said in a statement Friday that another 22 crew members also are ill, with people reporting vomiting and diarrhea. Authorities said it's not yet clear what is causing the illness.

I swear some tourist flock to these cruise ships knowing already they have some form of a virus, and they deliberately try to get any part of their bodily fluids on items or in foods as much as possible, just like a firebug arsonist they then enjoy seeing the misery of others.
I bet there is even an underground forum somewhere that has threads on which cruise line to target, how to become a passive carrier, how to conveniently perform acts like double dipping spreads and dips, sneezing in the open and what kind of a passenger to target as the next carrier, they do it for entertainment.

Why do so many cruise ships have these major outbreaks of illness? It seems that we hear about this problem about ten times a year.

It’s media bias. Stomach viruses go around hotels, restaurants, schools, government offices, etc. but it’s not the gleeful event that allows luxury travelers to get their comeuppance with a media story.

Just like they report priest abuses, but not public school teacher abuses.

The ships are staffed with third world refugees, unaccustomed to sanitary practices.

So less that 10 percent of the passengers were affected.

My boyfriend and I took a Royal Caribbean cruise in October. The crew worked hard to keep things clean and there were hand sanitizer dispensers all over the place. Take the proper precautions and you don't get sick.

Go below decks and see where those people live. Disgusting. It is why those ships are not US registered.

We just got off the Country Cruising cruise last Sunday on Norwegian Cruise Lines. My wife and I have been fighting a cold ever since. The only casualty during the cruise was Trace Adkins falling off the wagon and being flown to rehab. There was a lot of that going round.

This is precisely the reason we refuse to go on a cruise ship.

“I had the lasagna.”

I see where you went with that. Always love a gratuitous “Airplane” quote.

One of the biggest things I hated about getting underway. Within 3 days the one guy who had stomach bug had 3/4 of the crew down or in the head.

Hand sanitizers aren’t effective against norovirus, unless you buy one of the brands made specifically to do so.

My wife and I have been on six cruises with Royal Caribbean and have never experienced any problems.....wash your hands at every opportunity and stay hydrated.

I cruise on my own boat but.......we have a 100 gallon water tank on board that literally doesn’t get used for anything except washing dishes. First thing I always tell everyone is.......don’t drink the water, there is plenty of bottled water and beer. ;)
We add the water additive that supposedly keeps it drinkable but I just don’t trust it. It sits too long.

Which ships have you been on that you’re reporting your experiences from?

My experience differs. Yes, the crew is from different nations (lots of Philippinos), but they aren’t third world, nor refuges. Food handling and hygiene vastly exceeds land-based US restaurants.

Actually, they are foreign registered to avoid union workers, and other onerous regulations.

But ships that call in the US are subject to US health and safety regulations.

I don’t know where you get this “below decks” nonsense from.

“avoid union workers”

Wrong. Where did you get that? No ship in a right to work State ever has to contend with unions, so your statement is blatantly false. The ships do have to contend with union dock workers anyway.

“I don’t know where you get this “below decks” nonsense from.”

Port inspectors. Health inspectors. Federal customs agents. That’s where.

“of Philippinos), but they aren’t third world”

Contradicting yourself in you own sentence.

My #1 thought. People mistakenly call that “the stomach flu.”

I tried that one cruise. I just threw out the water. Worked like a charm! I don’t remember getting sick, but then, I don’t remember the cruise. :^)
