Immigration reform battle centers on conservative Tea Party bloc (GOP Amnesty Retreat starts Wed!)
The Hill ^ | 1/26/14 | Alexander Bolton and Russell Berman

Posted on 01/26/2014 10:57:40 AM PST by jimbo123

The immigration reform debate in the House could boil down to a handful of influential Tea Party conservatives.

Proponents and opponents of creating a pathway to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants and other reforms have zeroed in on “peer leaders” in the House GOP. These conservatives include Reps. Jason Chaffetz (Utah), Trey Gowdy (S.C.), Justin Amash (Mich.), Renee Ellmers (N.C.) and Steve Scalise (La.).

While there are vocal factions on either side of the debate, the battle for immigration reform will be fought over a bloc of lawmakers who have stayed relatively quiet on the issue. Many of them will take their lead from conservative colleagues they respect more than House GOP leaders or big business groups.

Both sides are battling for 117 Republican votes because Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has said he will only move legislation that has the support of a majority of the 233-member GOP conference.

Yeah, I've heard that before.

The GOPe actually claims to be conservative. They also claim to respect the rule of law. If the GOPe had a shred of integrity, they’d hold off on ALL immigration votes until such time that we have an administration that will faithfully execute whatever is passed. How in the world can any rational person vote for immigration reforms when we have near daily examples of a president who picks and chooses what he wants to enforce? No matter what is written, President Obama will do what he wants. That should be clear to everyone involved.

This Retreat would more properly be titled to reflect its mission to establish a permanent Democrat majority.

Good afternoon. I thought this should be repeated...

How in the world can any rational person vote for immigration reforms when we have near daily examples of a president who picks and chooses what [law] he wants to enforce? No matter what is written, President Obama will do what he wants. That should be clear to everyone involved.

That should be clear to everyone sentient being involved.

Good to let these staunch conservatives know that we are with them.
However, it is also VERY important to let your elected representatives (regardless of party affiliation) how you stand on this issue, and to demand they do the job for which they were elected; i.e., the represent your views at the fedgov level.

The real conservatives are already with us. It’s the others we need to convince, or cajole, into supporting the right and proper approach: NO AMNESTY, NO WAY. Enforce existing law, and hold accountable all elected and appointed officials who work in contravention of that notion.

...why has Bonehead taken this on?...why is it suddenly the GOP’s problem?

I think their main motivation is to just get rid of the issue. They're tired of fighting it and things will be so much easier for them the next several years of their careers if they just cave and then, move on.

They aren't too concerned about how amnesty will affect American citizens, or the future of the US in general.

A fantastic statement. Bonehead has already broken that promise.

Come on, guys, hold your fire til you see the real enemy.

The fact is SOMETHING must be done about the immigration mess. We should allow hispanic workers into the country only via a legal process that controls the number, registers them, and does not give any path to citizenship that is more favorable than what applies to would-be immigrants from other countries.
