As part of the alleged bribes, Nagin's family members received a vacation in Hawaii; first-class airfare to Jamaica; private jet travel and a limousine for New York City totaling $23,500; and cellular phone service, the indictment said.
According to the indictment, the bribing businessmen allegedly received city contracts of $1 million for consulting, more than $3 million to build a project at Louis Armstrong International Airport, and $1 million for another airport project, the indictment said. Other contracts were for sidewalk repairs in the French Quarter and professional services, authorities allege.
Among the conspiracy charges is an accusation that Nagin awarded "no bid" work to a city contractor who provided "concealed and direct campaign monies" to Nagin, the indictment says.
Nagin allegedly received bribes from city contractors in the amounts of $60,000, $2,250, $50,000 and $10,000, the indictment says.
He also is accused of receiving a bribe in the form of granite inventory from a city construction contractor.
Nagin faces nine counts of honest services wire fraud, alleging he received nine wire transfers amounting to $12,500 each that were bribes or kickback payoffs from the same city construction contractor in 2010 and 2011, the indictment says. Those bribed totaled $112,500. In his 2005 tax return -- the same year that Katrina hit the Gulf Coast -- Nagin allegedly filed a false tax return claiming his income was $156,278, the indictment says.
He is also accused of filing false returns for 2006 listing his income at $170,364, for 2007 with an income of $31,163, and for 2008 with a $143,852 income, the indictment said.

I’m actually surprised that Holder would let this proceed, given the race of the defendant. But then again, didn’t Naigan point out that Bush wanted to send help but that the democrat State Governor wouldn’t allow it for several days? Maybe this is democrat pay back.

Allowing technology vendor Mark St. Pierre, who had a substantial no-bid contract with the city, to pay for the Nagin family’s lodging and other expenses on a trip to Hawaii in December 2004 and January 2005, and then to cover first-class airfare for a family trip to Jamaica in October 2005. After the Hawaii trip, St. Pierre began paying for cell phones for members of the Nagin family, the indictment says. In 2006, St. Pierre hosted a campaign fund-raiser in Chicago at which Nagin received “concealed and direct” contributions.
Helping the owner of a movie theater in eastern New Orleans, listed in the document as “Businessman A,” get out of delinquent tax and loan payments to the city. The amount of the debt is not specified. In return, the businessman spent $23,500 to send the Nagin family to New York City by private jet and limousine, the indictment says. The money was routed through a third party to hide the source, prosecutors allege.
Nagin’s adult sons, Jeremy and Jarin, were partners in the granite business and were recently summoned to the grand jury.
While Three Fold has been a regular recipient of city contracts since its founding in 2000, its public workload shot up after Hurricane Katrina. The company has had numerous no-bid city jobs: Among nine jobs featured on its website, five involve work for the city or related entities such as the Sewerage & Water Board.

It’s been so long the statute of limitations may have passed, since Holder is so quiet on this. Nagin should have been indicted shortly after Katrina. I don’t know Louisiana law on this one?? Anyone?

Aaron Bennett, a businessman awaiting sentencing in a separate bribery case, told The Times-Picayune that he introduced Nagin to Fradella specifically to help the mayor get Home Depot granite installation work for a business that he and his sons founded. Fradella’s company received millions of dollars in city contracts for repair work at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and in the French Quarter after Katrina, the newspaper reported.
Some of the allegations in the indictment have been the subject of state ethics complaints. In April 2010, the Louisiana Board of Ethics charged Nagin with two possible violations of state ethics law.
One charge involves Nagin’s “use of a credit card and/or gifts” from St. Pierre and his technology firm, NetMethods, while the company was working for the city. NetMethods paid for Nagin and his family to travel to Jamaica in 2005 and to Hawaii in 2004, according to newspaper reports.
In the other charge, the Ethics Board says Stone Age LLC, the Nagin family’s business, was compensated for installation services provided to Home Depot while the home improvement retailer was negotiating tax breaks from the city.
Nagin has largely steered clear of the political arena since he left office. On his Twitter account, he describes his current occupations as author, public speaker and “green energy entrepreneur.” He wrote a self-published memoir called “Katrina’s Secrets: Storms After the Storm.”
