Sharing a united Jerusalem (op-ed: EU/UN security forces enforcing “Palestinian” sharia law?)
Yedioth Ahronoth ^ | 01.29.14, 08:49 | Rafael Castro

Jerusalem will seal the fate of the current peace negotiations. Jews and Arabs must square the circle and recognize the legitimate demands of each side in order to clinch a genuine peace agreement. Is doing so a geometrical impossibility or can Jerusalem transcend the limits of political geometry? […]

The Gordian knot negotiators need to tackle is reconciling Arab sovereignty aspirations with Jewish security rights. This political aporia can only be solved by looking beyond the bounds of European political convention. Although there are good reasons to oppose a Palestinian militarization of east Jerusalem, there is no reason Arabs in east Jerusalem should be ruled by Israeli laws. Should it thus not be possible to agree that European Union- or United Nations-led security forces enforce Palestinian laws in east Jerusalem?

There are several benefits to such an arrangement. Firstly, it reassures Israel that east Jerusalem will not evolve into a second Gaza Strip. Secondly, it ensures that east Jerusalemites will be patrolled by security forces that are more humane and professional than their Israeli and Palestinian counterparts. Thirdly, this solution affirms the jurisdiction and de facto sovereignty of a Palestinian parliament over east Jerusalem without harming Jewish security interests. …

And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. — Luke 21:20
Appears to be what Señor Castro is proposing. Never mind accusing the IDF of being less “professional” than the UN security forces!

UN and EU forces cannot be trusted.

A security force comprised entirely of soldiers from India would be the best. But Israel should never divide Jerusalem anyway so why worry about implementation details.

It was idiocy to place the Temple Mount under foreign control...WTF was Israel thinking when they did that!? Oy Vey....

These "could" fantasies are poor substitutes for critical thinking. Does this joker not know the Pali's have declared that they will have all of Jerusalem, period? Does he think maybe they are just kidding? Pointless daydreaming.

Meanwhile, he proposes having foreign entities that support Hamas’ goals come into Jerusalem to administer “Palestinian” law, which is Sharia. That’s almost literally proposing inducing the events of Zechariah 14.

There are so many things wrong with this suggestion that I don't know where to start.

(1)Security is one of the reasons, but not the only one, not even the most important, why Israel does not want to divide Jerusalem. Let's not forget that Jerusalem has been the Jewish capital since King David's days.

(2)So, now EU forces are "more humane and professional than their Israeli counterparts"? I reckon it depends on the meaning of "humane". Maybe "inane"?

(3)I can see it now, with Jews and Arabs each subject to their own laws. For example, you could have a Jewish husband kill his wife and claim to be Muslim, subject to Sharia law, to escape Israeli justice. Great!

(4)What everybody seems to be forgetting is the price to be paid for those who divide the land: "I will enter into judgment with them there on account of My people, My heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations; they have also divided up My land" (Joel 3:2).
