China Is Playing 'Chicken' With US Warships In The South China Sea

HONG KONG — As anyone who has seen “Rebel Without a Cause” knows, playing chicken is dangerous for California teenagers in hot-rods.

But playing chicken with warships, cruisers, and fighter jets — well, that’s just another level of crazy.

Unfortunately, vessels from the US military and from other countries increasingly find themselves in such high-stakes confrontations on the East Asian seas, where China has adopted a strategy of making rivals flinch or risk collision.

Just this week, Chinese sailors parked three ships on a disputed reef 50 miles from the Malaysian coast and performed a ceremony in which they swore an oath “to safeguard [China’s] sovereignty and territorial interests.” Malaysia also claims the reef, and is building a naval base nearby to protect it against China’s claim.

That’s just the latest in an escalating series of incidents.

In November, China declared its right to patrol and regulate a large swath of airspace, including a zone controlled by Japan and areas regularly used by the US military. Since then, China says it has repeatedly dispatched surveillance planes to tail, monitor, and identify foreign fighters.

Did they load you on the “cattle” trailer to take you back to ship? I had SP one night there. The first class had us all pumped up for a fight after the EM club closed when we had to chaperoned the drunks onto the trailer. Other than one guy, nothing came of it.

Yup. What kind of people send trillions of $ to their enemies? What kind of people _transfer_ their wealth to their enemies? Who does the leadership/government of such a people work for?

The Swedes did not maintain neutrality through marksmanship, but rather by selling the NAZIs as much iron ore and nickel as they could haul away.

We had a Soviet Bear pilot put his aircraft so close to us we could see the centerfold of the Playboy magazine he pushed against his cockpit glass.

We waved, he gave a thumbs up. In 6 years on that boat, we trained the 5/54 inch guns on two ships. North Korea gunboats that were harassing us after the South Korean president was assassinated and we steamed across the 39th parallel in the dead of night about 20 miles off their coast and a Taiwanese destroyer that was getting froggy for some reason.

Well if the main criterion is doing business with your enemies, we’ve been there for a long time.

I remember the Bears came in low. We made aggressive moves on occasion on the Soviet ships to get them to key their fire control radar.

Just so long as we can still buy flip flops for $1 at walmart.

We don’t just send $$ to our enemies. We bring them over here by the millions. (Another thanks to Jorge Busho and his “religion of peace” comment.)

Half of China has no drinkable water and they are polluting themselves to death.
They aborted so many females that they have a lots of men for a few women.

They need land.
They need raw materials.
There will be a war with them IMO.

Wow! The closest we ever came to dealing with the Soviets and Chinese was at the Rendevous Room in Rapid City. They would on occasion show up and buy us drinks, hoping to pry information from us.

We would offer to buy them a drink, tell the MP’s they were there and that was that. A few weeks later someone else would show up and the process would be repeated.

Blame W Bush for normalizing trade relations with China. More appeasement from a quisling Republican. It’s like selling cannons to Hitler in 1940 because we weren’t at war with Germany.

You make good points.

But, the former CEO of Blackwater just went to work for the Chinese Communsts to aid in their expansion and operations in Africa.

They’re getting their land and raw materials.

The Chinese tiger has thrown the Russian bear under the bus, and is playing chicken with the running dogs of imperialism!
