Rep. Henry Waxman: The reason I’m leaving Congress
Washington Post ^ | 02/01/2014 | Rep. Henry A. Waxman

Posted on 02/01/2014 7:36:05 AM PST by SeekAndFind

I announced this past week that I will be retiring after having the honor of serving my Los Angeles constituents in Congress for 40 years.

Immediately, speculation began that I am leaving because I am frustrated with a broken institution. But the exact opposite is true: I am leaving Congress with my conviction intact that the legislative branch can be a powerful force for good.

Of course there are aspects of the current Congress that I abhor. This past week, every Republican on the Energy and Commerce Committee, where I have served most of my career, voted to limit the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to regulate carbon pollution that is causing climate change. When my colleague Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) offered a simple amendment affirming that climate change is real, they voted against that, too.

That kind of mindless denial of science is an embarrassment.

Voting over and over to repeal the Affordable Care Act, shutting down the government and threatening default are other deplorable examples of the extremism of tea party Republicans.

My opinion is that he thinks he’s stolen enough and can retire in ease and comfort far away from the rabble he purported to have represented.

"a simple amendment affirming that climate change is real,"

Reads simply, but the "science" behind it is a convoluted mess of lame statistics.

Odd. Mindlessness is something that Nostrilitis should be very familiar with.

Good riddance. Another piece of liberal garbage who has been trying with some degree of success to enslave all of us for 40 years. A pox on him and his constituents

It is rather horrifying that the Republicans did not affirm that climate change is real. Their refusal to show respect for global collectivism is evidence of how really nasty and backward they are.

Did it also plug your nose that your fellow traveler, Preezy Pajama Boy, granted a 30 year exemption from prosecution for killing endangered animals like The Bald Eagle by his and your beloved "environmentally friendly" windmills?

Yeah. I didn't think so.

Go away, liar.

RE: A pox on him and his constituents

His constituents would include much of the western part of the city of Los Angeles, as well as West Hollywood, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills.

The dis(honorable) Sandra Fluke is planning to take his place.

I think the enemies of the state see the writing on the wall, and the ones that are cowardly, do-nothing talkers are abandoning ship

They don't have the guts to REALLY fight .. fisticuffs and all that ... and I DO think that attitude is beginning to grow in politics.

Besides ... I have never been able to take my gazr off that Rod Serling character ... ever.

I wonder if he was around when Rod was looking for a model for "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"

He won the last election by only a couple percentage points. A capable candidate...with a few more topics of debate....could really put him in a bind. Toss in the health act to explain, and I think he just didn’t see the wisdom to defend what he did. The odds of some independent or newcomer Republican coming in and possibly winning the race? Maybe slightly better than 50-50.

What do you think the chances of DNC convention honorary speaker, Sandra Fluke are?
