‘Young Guns’ special looks at the dangerous intersection of children and firearms
NYD News ^ | 1-31-14 | Sasha Goldstein

Every hour, a child is hospitalized because of a gun.

Every other day, a child is killed by gunshots.

The staggering statistics, compiled by ABC News, are part of a new “20/20” investigation into youngsters and guns — and how to prevent them from shooting themselves or their peers.

An early preview of “Young Guns” on ABC’s “Good Morning America” shows how curious kids will find, and play with, guns if they find them.

After telling two young boys to yell for an adult if they find a gun, a child psychologist leaves a playroom where the youngsters’ every move is caught on camera.

The boys quickly find the gun — but they don’t call for help. Instead, one picks up the real, unloaded gun and even points it towards his face.

“I’m touching it,” he says, as if taunting. “I’m pulling it (the trigger). See how many times….”

The other boy then picks up the gun, takes fake aim and pretends to dry-fire the weapon.

You've hit the nail on the head. A large majority.

You hit the nail on the head. The vast majority of these “children” being killed and injured with guns are resulting from the violence of youth gangs.

Very few are from situations in which a child finds a gun and plays with it.

But liberals play fast and loose with the truth.

I would welcome an ABC study showing how many “children” are involved with the gangs, and that gang gun violence was the cause of their injuries/death, as opposed to children finding a gun and playing with it.

Will they even attempt to explain how young boys used to carry their guns to and from school many years ago and no one thought it was a big deal, and how and why it is different today (like how the “news” media and Dems have made everyone “afraid” of guns), or with they ignore it altogether?

In the early 2000’s, when I was living in the Washington, DC area, I was invited to be a panelist on a local TV show, hosted by a couple of local TV personalities, about guns and children.

When my turn came, near the end of the hour, having done my research, I spoke rather eloquently (I thought) about the advantage of using the NRA Eddie Eagle program to educate children re: gun safety.

Parenthetically, I was in the minority re: children being taught gun safety. Most of the folks in attendance spoke of the dangers of kids & guns and their fears.

IIRC, the program ended on time, we were thanked for our participation and we all went home. I later found out that the program was never aired! Instead, they convened a pre-selected panel and re-shot it, with an entirely different anti-gun slant.

The Eddie Eagle program is a good one: http://eddieeagle.nra.org/

The best response to this would be to do an Internet video to explain that most minors killed by guns are affiliated with gangs, and are killed by adult gangsters.

Most of the video can show such young gangsters in their natural environment: hanging in packs, making gang signs, acting tough, doing the knockout game, etc.

I would finish it up by just listing all the known street gangs in the US, by state. Quite a list.

According to the FBI, there are “33,000 violent street gangs, motorcycle gangs, and prison gangs with about 1.4 million members are criminally active in the U.S. today.”

According to the CDC, from 1999-2010, there were a total of 35,760 deaths related to firearms in the 0-19 age range. Of these, 32,398 were ages 14 through 19.

Now understand that this includes suicides, but still, that’s almost 91%. In fact, more than half, over 18,000, were either 18 or 19.

If you’re just looking at homicides, there were 23,016 for the time period in the 0-19 range. 20,845 were in the 14-19 range, again, about 91%. Again, its the same thing with 18 and 19 year olds accounting for just over half the total.

I don’t know about the others but I’ve just read “The Destiny of the Republic” by Candice Millard about the Garfield assassination. Charles Gitteau was a Stalwart Republican. The fact that you got that one wrong leads me to wonder about the rest of your list.

No, the problem isn’t the guns or the kids. The problem is lib parents who want to be their kids’ BFF rather than parents. When parents fail at teaching morals and values, this is what happens.

You don’t leave loaded guns laying around a house full of kids for the same reason you don’t leave matches, lighters, plastic bags, prescription drugs, poisons, etc. sitting around. Sooner or later, something bad will happen. Recently there was a kid that died from eating a clothes washer detergent packet.
