How we ended up with a generation of no-discipline, no-talent job seekers
The Washington Post's Capital Business ^ | February 2, 2014 | Marina Ein

Helicopter parents, professors who aim to please, the dumbing down of standards in courses and decreasing curriculum requirements have succeeded in reducing our young workforce to a no-discipline, no-talent pool of job seekers. Harsh words for sure — but a generation out there is desperately in need of a reality check.

As a small-business employer, I have seen a disturbing downward talent drift in job candidates — most acutely in the past five years. When a job candidate’s first question is about vacation days or benefits, we know we have encountered collateral damage from the teachers and parents who believed in “softening the learning experience.” Armed with a meaningless bachelor’s degree from colleges and universities that allowed majors in non-core subjects, we see youngsters who cannot write, research or think analytically. Their lack of discipline is evident in job applications filled with typos and cover letters that reveal no interest in teamwork or service — rather, they emphasize their high opinion of themselves. (Many young job seekers come forward with an executive attitude that is backed by zero capabilities).

To heap insult on injury, this generation is unable to face criticism or negative evaluations. Having been shielded from the hardships of tough educational standards, they require praise and positivity — no matter how superficial their work and dedication may be. Recently, George Washington University Medical School offered faculty the opportunity to attend a lecture on how to work with millenials. It has come to this: They cannot perform, so it falls to employers to figure out how best to save their careers.

As someone who has worked with countless extraordinarily hard-working and skilled young people over the years, the dearth of college graduates with any ability is fear-inducing....

I suppose it is a good place to inculcate the ethic that the essence of business it to serve people. But it doesn’t give them any skills to serve people with value to make middle class income.

Parents allowed it.
There were also PROBABLY too many working mothers and children were left at home with baby-sitter.
There were also probably too many single mothers: recipe for failure when "dad" is NOWHERE to be found; it cheats the children ROYALLY.
Parents HAD to have the STUFF.

They brought it all on themselves and, unfortunately on their children. Woe to them! My, I sound Biblical!

This comes from children being brought up with their HAND OUT, feeling ENTITLED.

“Can’t these kids go two or three hours without drinking something?”

It’s not the liquid. It’s the sugar. They’re addicted to it. And everyone of then will have Type 2 Diabetes by age 40. By 50 they’ll all have heart disease and probably NASH.

And here is another —where I live in the USA we have MANY Asian food restaurants. Not always but often a feature in the restaurant is the presence of the young kids of the workers or owners:

Quite often the kids perform tiny task in the eatery —returning change to a customer, or bringing silverware.

It seems not so much labor as TEACHING —the working parents are teaching their charges about a WORKING ROLE, and something about commerce. They’re teaching about the role between action and consequence, solicitation and payment, very key lessons in life.

And you know what? Almost all customers see this and warmly APPROVE.

Hey, why is it that it’s always HONKY KIDS that get the cops called on their cute Lemonade stand..?

It’s like there’s this huge double-standard —budding non-white tiny entrepreneur is endearing and welcome, but if the uppity tyke is pigment challenged, well then the squad cards, clip-boards and hard questions start buzzing around nattering on about licences and regulations, giving them the passive-aggressive Nurse Wratchet treatment:

— >STOP BUSTING LEMONADE STANDS. <—

The kids are rotten, yup, but you know what?

The system they’re thrown into right now is really rotten, also.

A real cost of illegal immigration is our young people are NOT getting exposed to early work experiences.

If there were no employers HIRING them, they wouldn't be here. The illegals only come where they KNOW they can find work. Very simple:

no work for illegals here = no illegals working here.

My 17 year old son goes to school all day then busts his backside working as a dishwasher most nights. He wants to work to pay for gas for his car and save money. And, oh yeah, he’s a honor roll student, top 10% of his class.

Most of his friends are of the same ilk. It’s not all doom and gloom out there with regards to young people.

Of course the government will take most of their hard-earned money...but that’s another subject.

From the Article:
As a small-business employer, I have seen a disturbing downward talent drift in job candidates — most acutely in the past five years.

This is funny; it correlates roughly with the huge economic downturn and, if reports are to be believed, many people being "lucky enough to have a job" — in fact, given human nature, I would find it surprising if companies didn't take advantage of this say by pressuring/demanding unpaid overtime (or mandatory overtime).

A lot of people whine about young-people being "untrainable" — but how many have actually tried training them? (And I mean more along the line of mentoring/hands-on-teaching, not hey kid, watch this video.)

I'd actually argue that in my industry [computer science] there is a distinct anti-training mentality. Heck, when entry-level positions require 2-5 years of experience on the exact systems being used, there's something wrong. {A few have claimed that the reason is so companies can claim there are no qualified hires and import H1B visa workers, which tend to be more exploitable [in addition to driving down the average wages] as an explanation for this in STEM jobs.} — I call it the cookie-cutter candidate problem, where they want someone who is already a "perfect fit" as if they've already been there years.

I don't blame the colleges. Colleges are businesses which generate revenue by getting living bodies into the classroom. The majority of high school graduates are too stupid to learn, so colleges invent bogus classes and degrees that a monkey could pass.

I blame the parents. They've been indoctrinated with the idea that their children are little gods. Their (the parent's) task is to make their little darlings feel special. Spoiled. Entitled.

Back when America was great, children were brought up to feel ordinary. They had responsibility. They had chores. They had to perform, especially in school.

Now children are brought up to feel special. And when a person feels he's "special", he expects "special" treatment.

Lower sugar intake and EXERCISE would prevent SO many health problems. We all want to live long lives that have QUALITY and a minimum of health problems. Sure, a lot is genetic but we can sure eat BETTER and MOVE MORE [more than the wrist in changing channels.:o)]

Nope, your son is no good. All the old farts (who would no doubt label their own teen/20-somethin selves degenerate losers were they ever to meet them) have decreed it thus.

Another part of the problem is the replacement of the father in the home with a government check.

Like carrot and stick, the mother is the loving indulgent role, and the father tends to be the one who finally steps in and imposes discipline, if it’s needed:

That is exactly how the workplace is —a place that requires discipline, not indulgence. And very many kids aren’t getting a good dose of the fatherly discipline, although they are getting medicated pretty often, as the mass-shootings show.

Not only are all traditional “teen jobs” getting vacuumed up by illegal aliens, but also the kids are getting heavy exposure to crypto-collectivist REGULATIONS and procedure.

Regulations, i.e., the things you cannot do, are not really the go-gas of commerce, in fact, they are BRAKES on business.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IS A WAR ON TEENS.

(which means a war on the learning of healthy work habits)

As a small-business employer, I have seen a disturbing downward talent drift in job candidates — most acutely in the past five years...it was about five years ago when I heard my brother-in-law, who teaches high school art, mumbling about how difficult it was to reach his students - I asked what the trouble was and he said kids today just don't care about anything - maybe when things come too easily, those who get them never learn to value them or what it takes to earn them....

What do they even SAY to recruits nowadays? All the four letter words, and the MF’er type variants seem to be normal speech today. How do you get their attention?? ;)
