My very first dog (as an adult) was a mutt named Sam who I got at the pound. He grew into a smart little guy and he looked like Benji. When I put him through dog obedience he beat out all the other dogs in the class including the pure breeds. The trainer told me to enter him in this pure breed utility trial. I said, "So when they ask me what breed he is what do I say?" and he said, "Call him an American Terrier."
So, I did and he did real well. But two ladies kept following me around because they didn't believe their was a such thing as an American Terrier.
Today, my dog woulda had a shot at the bigtime.

American Terriers are now called Rat Terriers. Check the breed out.

Our little mixed breed terrier was adorable. I found him starved and a few hours from death in a cemetery (of all places!). Anyways, I disliked the term “Heinz 57” or “mutt”. I referred to him as a “distinguished dog from non selective breeding”.
