We interrupt our continuing coverage of Chris Christie to examine which Republicans have a better shot at the presidency if Christie is damaged goods.
Which is sheer speculation, of course. And that happens to be the medias specialty.
Bill Kristol stirred up a bit of a fuss yesterday by declaring that theres no reason Sarah Palin shouldnt run for president. Kristol, whose Weekly Standard was a major Palin booster in 2008, didnt predict she would win, but he said she'd have a major impact on the race.
Kristol, a former Fox News contributor, also forecast on Morning Joe that two other Fox contributors would run: Mike Huckabee and former U.N ambassador John Bolton. (Both have said theyre looking at the race.)
I have no inside information here, but Palin certainly wouldnt lack for media attention. Kristol, who worked in the Bush 41 White House, is a well-connected Republican, and if this was a trial balloon, it raises intriguing questions.
On the MSNBC morning show, Chuck Todd pushed back, saying that if Palin ran it would be for a financial reason, to get back into the spotlight. Get the speaking fees back up.
This annoyed Kristol, who said that the establishment takes seriously such candidates as Jon Huntsman (who flopped), but dismisses the likes of Palin and Huckabee as people who just want to make money. Host Joe Scarborough (also named by Kristol as a 2016 dark horse) said Palins populist message could resonate in the GOP primaries but that she hurt herself by resigning as Alaska governor....

Comeback? really?
How does that term mean anything NOW.
If we can have a demonstrably Anti-American, gratuitously fielded minority , laughably incompetent, inexperienced and malicious poseur occupying the WH... how does the word ‘comeback’ figure in the political language any more?
I don’t know if Sarah would run for POTUS, but if she does, she has my vote.
Of course my vote won’t mean much against the hoards of dead guys who will vote progressive.
Fat boi dead man waddling is going nowhere.
If she runs, every spare dollar I have goes to it.
I agree 100%.
NO. Stupid idea.
Forget her, Gingrich, Romney and Trump.
Or the live ones who have allowed themselves to be propagandized into thinking she's just a low-IQ publicity seeker. Sarah won't win in today's America, but she'd have my vote anyway.
It hurts to think how much better off as a nation we would be under the leadership of Sarah Palin.
I agree with you supporting Palin, but strongly disagree that Palin wouldn’t fare well.
She has some pre-race positioning to get herself back into things, but she’s been vetted unlike any other candidate.
I strongly support Palin.
No hesitation at all. As presidential candidate, or as VP. The biggest consideration is who she would be strongest, joining for the next election.
Personally I don’t think she’ll run. Hope she proves me wrong. I still may write her name in if the Republican establishment chooses another RINO for us.
Which is the larger, more important dis-qualifier.......
Resigning a governorship or losing a Senate race?
Being a seemingly inarticulate Governor with a fantastic record or a senator with the office time measured in weeks?
Being a fat Yankee governor or a minority Rebel Governor?
Or..... being a slim, articulate, solidly conservative governor that runs a large budget surplus and trounced unions and hateful hordes of orange shirted lawbreakers illegally occupying the State Capital?
I can’t see Palin running for anything. If she does run, I think she will lose AK as well as many “Republican” states. People are pre-committed to a second Clinton, and I don’t think we can do a thing about it.
I doubt she will, but I think she’d have just about as good a chance as anyone else.
Look at last time when guys like Cain, Santorum, and even Bachmann all had their time at the top. I mean, Santorum polled about 1% higher than you for all of 2011.
She has total name ID and would gets tons of free media coverage. She has still has very high favorables and a lot of people like her even if they don’t necessarily think she should run or would be a good candidate. But I think that means there’s a lot of latent support and a reservoir of goodwill.
It would all depend on how she did. If she announced and gave a few good interviews and did well an early debate or two she’d be right there with all the others. If she does a repeat of the Couric interview or pulls a Rick Perry-like debate performance she’d be finished immediately. High risk, high reward.
I’d suggest she has the highest potential ceiling of all the GOP potentials. She also probably has the lowest floor, though.
Kristol haaaaates Palin, so this has many grains of salt to be taken with it....
She should start with a winnable Senate seat and THEN run 6 years down the road. Promise to not quit.
Forgot to mention. Republican WOMEN will be her undoing in a big WH race. Women in general are VERY jealous of her. She’s got it all. Looks, big family, hunky husband-everything women want to answer Freud’s question.
What I said wasn’t an indictment of Palin — I support her without hesitation as well.
My beef is with the electorate that has 1.) Succumbed to the narrative that she’s a quitter and an idiot; and 2.) Moved decidedly leftward in recent years.
I agree. And what's frustrating is Americans don't care about her background... they just see her as the one who would more forcefully shove Obama's agenda down our throats.
Oh I get that.
Not to worry. I am just maybe stronger in my opinion of Palin’s electability than you are.
Our entire media is in Hillery’s pocket.
The only exception is Fox News and Rush Limbaugh really, but Fox has their own opinion of what is best for the GOP.
So pretty much Palin got to what she has, by her own self, and with the strong help of John McCain in 2008.
Which is why she is so supportive of the goober.
She’s a very strong candidate.
