Senator suggests quick approval, delayed enactment of immigration law

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. immigration reforms could be passed now but enacted after President Barack Obama leaves office if Republicans fear he will not enforce the new rules, a key Democratic senator said Sunday, offering a way to achieve one of Obama's main policy objectives.

Last week, Republican House Speaker John Boehner expressed doubts Obama's long-sought overhaul of immigration laws would be passed this year and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said there was little interest in the issue with congressional elections looming in November.

Boehner said one of the biggest obstacles to immigration reform in the House was a concern that Obama would not fully enforce any laws that might be approved. As evidence of that, he accused him of changing "the healthcare law on a whim, whenever he likes".

On NBC's "Meet the Press" program, Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat and one of chief architects of the Senate's bipartisan immigration plan, offered what he said was a simple solution.

"Let's enact the law this year but simply not let it actually start until 2017 after President Obama's term is over," he said.

"Now, I think the rap against him that he won't enforce the law is false. He's deported more people than any president but you could actually have the law start in 2017 without doing much violence to it."

Schumer said it would be difficult to pass immigration reform in 2015 or 2016 when the next presidential election season opens because Republican candidates would be staking out conservative positions on immigration in order to differentiate themselves from Democrats.

I would not trust these people as far as I could throw them.Instead spending time taken care of illegal aliens. How about helping out Americans ? Our jobless receives unemployment extensions and that's about all team Obama can offer jobless Americans and when that dries up there will be nothing left for them. The many in congress work hard day and night debating how best can they help out illegal aliens ?

Duh, Chuckie. You are not in a party. You are a cult, walking in lockstep. The next version of your kind will be equally untrustworthy.

Satire from Rotor Reuters?

Hey! I've got an idea. Let's enforce the immigration "laws" that we already have on the books?! Why create a bunch more phonyass "laws" that we have no intention of ever enforcing?!

And we’re sure President Hillary Clinton will be reluctant to welcome millions of Mexican citizens into the ranks of Democrat voters....not! If Republicans fall for any of these schemes, they are too stupid to hold office.

If Chuck Schumer approves of legislation, that is a SURE SIGN that smart people ought to oppose said legislation.

Chuck, that’s a great idea! Particularly if you really want to ensure a mega flood of even more illegals before there is even the teensiest chance of any kind of enforcement. Of course, I’m sure that’s not your intention is it?

Yeah, like we should trust these guys. Remember when they pulled a version of that crap on Reagan in 1986? “Legalize them now, and later (cough) we’ll tighten up the border”.

Of course, the GOP-e has a big “SUCKER” stamped on their forehead (they love that cheap labor anyway) and might go for it. I don’t trust either side on this.

Tough enforcement first, THEN we’ll discuss the rest.

Is this not a rather foolish statement? Not just Republicans but many Americans fear that any Democratic administration will NOT enforce any laws they do not like! People are beginning to realize that we have nothing but perverts in congress, especially Democrats!

Democrats have shown this propensity since 1987 if not sooner than that.

The GOPe is in its death throes. The incumbents already there know it too, and are trying to enact policies in order to collect lobbyist loot and still have slim chance of not being thrown out by angry conservatives, either by being primaried or by angry conservatives staying home again if they win their primaries. They can’t stay there and collect the payoff if they get thrown out, but there’s also no payoff if they don’t come through for the lobbyists. What happens after that, they don’t care. They know the GOPe is a dead duck soon, one way or another.

The GOP response is simple: The last time we did a quick deal was Obamacare. How did that work out for you, Chuck?

We'll take our time and get it right. We can start down the path by enforcing the existing laws. Go away Chuck.

"Now, I think the rap against him that he won't enforce the law is false. He's deported more people than any president but you could actually have the law start in 2017 without doing much violence to it."

These are not real deportations from say Chicago or Iowa.

The vast majority of these "deportations" simply are Mexicans who are caught at the border and sent back immediately to Mexico to try again. This is a major Obama Admin lie
