Cochran challenger questions time spent in state

Sen. Thad Cochran’s (R-Miss.) primary challenger, state Sen. Chris McDaniel, suggested on Monday that Cochran may face questions over his residency similar to those that have dogged — and in one case, toppled — other senators with primary challengers.

Speaking to reporters at a gathering of conservative candidates hosted by FreedomWorks on Monday, McDaniel said his campaign was "watching...very carefully" whether Cochran maintains a residence in the state in a response to a question about other senators who had lapses.

But McDaniel said he had never seen Cochran in Mississippi during his seven years in the state Senate, and cited anecdotal accounts from friends and supporters on the campaign trail “who have never physically laid eyes on him.”

“That’s the reality, and that begs the question, how could one be responsive to the local people if he doesn’t know the will of the people?” he said. “We’re watching that very carefully — he’s almost never in the state.”

He later added: “There are people my age that haven’t seen him, ever. And he came to my area for the first time in 24 years just a few days ago,” he added.

McDaniel’s main rationale for running has been Cochran’s long tenure in Congress, and he’s argued that the senator is out of touch with the state — an argument that would gain legs if McDaniel were able to prove outright that Cochran is never back home in the state.

Cochran’s campaign brushed off the suggestion that he’s not in the state often enough.

"That is too absurd for a response," said Cochran spokesman Jordan Russell.

The crux of the problem, in a nutshell.

People go to DC, sometimes with the best of intentions, then become part of the power swirl located there. They live there most of the time, their families are there, their friends are there. They forget who they are/were and most importantly WHOSE they are.

They forget their constituents and begin to think they are “Leaders of the World”.

Cochran like most second term plus CongressCritters is a resident and citizen of Washington D.C.
Mississippi? He lived in Mississippi until he discovered the wealth and power to be had in the Land Of Oz. Around 1980.

“’That is too absurd for a response,’ said Cochran spokesman Jordan Russell.”

Correction: “it’s too uncomfortable for a response.”

I don’t know anyone who likes Cochran, but I live in one of the most conservative counties, if not the most conservative, in Mississippi. My sense of McDaniel is that he would prove to be a reliable conservative voice. At the very least I would be surprised if he became a big spending establishment stooge like Cochran.

They have to pay for dinner and drinks in their home state. It is paid for by the criminal class in DC.

There are way, way too many Senators from Washington DC.

Until we fix this, things will not improve.

MS has never turned out an incumbent senator, has it? Not since World War II anyway

People in MS may not “like” Cochran, but they associate him with power and their beloved incumbency and seniority.

Don’t take my comment as a prediction that McDaniel will win.

Being a resident of MS, I’d be interested in knowing your gut feeling on this Election. I know you live in a Conservative area, because you said so, but, could you give a good “guess” at how the Primary Election might go state-wide? I don’t mean to sound like a pollster, but, as of today, do you think that Chris McDaniel 1. Probably will win or 2. Might win or 3. Probably will not win?

Just curious.

But, how many incumbent Senators in MS since WWII have had a serious Primary challenger?

I don’t have a good sense of the race yet. My best guess is that he has a shot to beat Cochran, which is something no one else has had that I can recall, but he is far from a sure thing. Cochran is a greasy big spender who has bought a lot of loyalty from the right people. So, as of right now I would go with “might” win.

Every thread, you are supporting the establishment incumbent. Are you getting paid to do that?
