House passes debt-ceiling increase with no add-ons
CNBC ^

Posted on 02/11/2014 2:35:53 PM PST by Red in Blue PA

This is a developing news story. An earlier version of the article follows:

House GOP leaders announced Tuesday they will advance this week an increase in the government's borrowing cap that's free of any add-ons. A vote is scheduled for Tuesday night because of the threat of a winter storm.

House Speaker John Boehner announced the plan after a poll of the Republican rank and file failed to show enough support for a plan to tie the hike in the debt limit to a plan to reverse a recently passed cut to military pensions.

The Ohio Republican said he expected virtually all of President Barack Obama's Democratic allies to vote for the so-called clean debt cap increase but that he would be one of the few Republicans to back it in the vote.

Are you planning to fight the battle……

Fortunately, I am not fighting nor planning to fight the battles.

I am but an observer. In a Republic, political fighting is delegated to those elected to do battle.

What I see are Republican forces on the defense in the money battle with a relatively small (compared to the massed opposition) conservative assault force chomping at the bit to attack. The generals permitted several attacks that were all repulsed. Sometimes there were very few casualties but once or twice the force was totally repulsed and beat up pretty bad.

There appears to be strong sentiment among some of the troops to attack for the purpose of doing something even if it was wrong. Wrong in the sense that it accomplished pretty much nothing except harm the assaulting force.

Although we assume we know, we don’t know what we don’t know. We don’t know our General’s plans nor their officers plans at the tactical level. It appears they have allowed the several assaults to make the point. Rather than frontal attack up the valley ringed by artillery, some other point of attack will produce better results.

If one widens his point of view, it is obvious that serious attacks on the flanks and to the rear are in not only in process but may be achieving success. The forces involved are not Federal but State troops, Republican with strong conservative attributes. State Governors and legislatures and attorneys’ general are making headway. Their assault is not against the impenetrable budget/debt ceiling fortress but against Obamacare, the oppositions pitifully weak rear flank. This assault will be decided in the court.

Power or will?……. The apparent answer is that will is a function of power. In the short term, if power is deficient, will can not prevail.

Remember bert’s rule…… History is a process, not an event.

Comforting thought to cancer patients/IRS…….

In the immediate short term, some people are going to be severely hasseled. What was is no more even if the President takes backward steps to redo his screwups. The Republican congress is powerless to make it better immediately. That is especially true when the President is an outlaw tyrant making it up as he goes. The IRS is being hurt in the Congressional hearings. The process is slow but successful. The results, damaging results, will be brought forth in good time to have an effect on the elections. These various hearings are attacks on the flanks.

Real battle, the generals……..
The war must be fought with the forces and equipment available. An analysis of the projected future seems to indicate that at the federal level there might be fresh troops, conservative troops, to engage the battle after November.

Even to perfect generals, there will still be unknowns that will influence the battles. The greatest of the unknowns is the Supreme Court. I have come to believe that Obama has put it all off because he believes that the combined forces of the States and the Court will destroy Obamacare. The Supreme court then becomes his political ally. He gets off scott free. The court will become George Bush and get the blame.

best to keep the focus on Obamacare ……
The pressure on Obamacare is coming from many directions by multiple forces, not the least of which are democrats. By postponing everything, rationalizing abandoning the law as enforcing that which is allowed within the law, Obama has capitulated. He has by his actions, retreated to what he considers a position of defensive safety while he is unable to effectively repel the attacks coming from all sides.

Although we can and hopefully will gather to raise our massed voices to express disgust and dismay, our primary weapon is our vote. Those that chose to desert the battle and personal responsibility, and not vote are cowards lacking the guts to make a strong decision.

Continuing your military analogy, thwarting any attempt at uncompensated debt ceiling increase is the main objective of the conservative cause in Congress. Boehner's behavior should be likened to waiving a white flag, or ceding the capital, or the general hiding behind his troops. It shows us what caliber of people represent the conservative cause in Congress. This is an act of treason, not some kind of clever maneuver.

You are full of crap. I have worked on campaigns since Reagan's first run. I will match you dollar for dollar and hour for hour of time and money spent trying to elect Conservatives in local, State and Federal elections.

You are a prime example of why America and the republican party are dying. All that you have to do to prove that what I say is true is to look at the dimrat party. When Republicans held the White House, the Senate and the House... the rat party never just went along for the ride and preached to their base that there was “nothing that can be done until”. No, they called Bush the most vile things... they sent traitorous US SENATORS to Iraq to defend hussein and to paint Bush as a war criminal. They made movies of pure propaganda and lies that painted Bush and Republicans as the source of all evil and problems in the world. They destroyed the lives of those Conservatives that were the biggest threat to their return to power. They had war rooms... war games... war plans and warriors fighting 24/7.

The rats won in 2006 and in 2008 and in 2012 and they have implemented their agenda and they have destroyed generations of the American Dream in doing so... and beltway drones like yourself tell me that you can do nothing without giving the republican party more power! When they had it they refused to use it! Good old trent lott wanted to SHARE power with the rats when we had a one seat majority... would harry reid do that? harry reid pulled the nuclear option in the Senate... would any republican alive have the balls to do that? The rats have used the irs to crush TEA Party groups... with the cooperation of the gop/e... and Nixon only was recorded thinking about using the irs against his enemies. He was destroyed by the rat party and with massive help from the republican party.

THAT is what I mean by fighting... no one ever won a war by NOT fighting and those that fight like the rats... fight and win... and they are kicking your republican party's arse into the history bin. You are delusional at best.

Of course...because our Generals are P#$$%es who don't like to fight.

Thank you bert for this statement:

“Although we can and hopefully will gather to raise our massed voices to express disgust and dismay, our primary weapon is our vote. Those that chose to desert the battle and personal responsibility, and not vote are cowards lacking the guts to make a strong decision.”
____________________________________________________________
That is the crux of my total argument, that we must try to get a more Conservative voice into the Senate. Sure the House voted to Impeach Clinton, but it is a moot point in that it cost him nothing....the Senate could not get the 2/3 vote to accomplish anything and he stayed out his term and received his retirement so what was the point? Without the Senate it becomes a disaster to hold anyone accountable or make the necessary changes to reverse some of the damage.

Although we can and hopefully will gather to raise our massed voices to express disgust and dismay, our primary weapon is our vote. Those that chose to desert the battle and personal responsibility, and not vote are cowards lacking the guts to make a strong decision.

I hope everyone realizes that although we may disagree with what is going on with some of the GOP leaders...we DO NOT HAVE alternatives this late in the game. VOTE GOP and then take them on to try and effect the changes necessary.

So your answer is to put the Democrats back in power by destroying the only alternative the GOP...how dumb you are.

The democrats paying you for this divisiveness?

Well said, FRiend. Until the GOP fights fire with fire they will continue to lose. People are being hurt by democratcare today. Telling those suffering to wait until 2016 just doesn’t cut it. We need to fight these rampaging marxists NOW.

Since the GOP isn’t doing that I think it is safe to presume they really don’t intend to ever repeal obamacare. The same goes for other issues like the IRS scandals. No substantive engagement on the IRS issue shows they simply don’t care conservatives are being assaulted by our government.

Conservatives should take note of this inaction and proceed accordingly.

Nobody is paying attention to the IRS hearings exept political junkies. The abuse continues. Boehner does nothing about it. He doesn’t deem it worthy his attention.

The problem is the GOP rhetoric on obamacare does not match their actions. On monday Boehner attacks the business waiver. This was a perfect opening to attach a personal exemption to the debt ceiling. Boehner did nothing.

The bottom line is the GOP does not want to oppose obamacare in a substantive way. They are happy to sit back and let 80 million people lose their employer provided health insurance. Once that happens government run health care is a fait accompli.

If they really opposed 80 million people losing their insurance, now is the time to fight it. That the GOP are blank check funding obamacare without a fight tells us all we really need to know about their motives and future plans.

Free Republic was a united front in 2000 and 2004 and had great influence in the elections, and because of the ‘United We Stand’ attitude, some even boarded a bus in 2000 to go to Florida, and helped stop the ‘hanging chad counting in a closed room that would have got Al Gore elected”. Bush owes FR that win.

Yes, in the past I have donated to FR quietly, through the mail, and I only come here during election years, and the last time I saw a divisiveness that disturbed me in the threads, and the GOP lost; now I wonder if some FR people aren’t going to actually hurt the elections this year by not using the only avenue to regaining the Senate...VOTES.

You hurt the cause even more by calling me the poser, when you are the divider. Even the Israelites did not enter the promise land due to their ‘murmoring and their complaining’...that was a lesson all should have learned from. And in Phillipians 2:14 it is a required act.

I have been here since before the 2000 election and you may give a lot more money, but you are still hurting the chances of a victory for conservatives in 2014. In fact you are causing your money to have no effect for victory.

I doubt this kind of divisiveness and GOP attacks will help anyone. Remember this “if you don’t help get unity here to help change the voting block in the Senate, then FR could be shutdown by the very left you claim to oppose in the future”. Who do we blame? I will blame the whiners and divisive ones who did not work with the only option available to Conservatives.

Giving lots of money is good, but not if it isn’t backed up with a full force of united voters. So good luck with that.

Obviously the GOP can do nothing unless they have a majority in the Senate, any one who understands politics would know that.

Nonsense. As long as Obama is in the WH, he can veto anything he wants and there are not enough votes to overturn his veto. Anyone who understands how our system works would know that.

Also, even if the Reps were to take over the Senate, albeit with a narrow margin, it would be very difficult to pass legislation because of cloture rules, i.e., you need 60 votes to cut off debate. Reid went nuclear on confirmations. Will the GOP do the same on legislation? And don't forget that the GOP ranks in the Senate have a number of "moderates" who will not vote with the majority of Reps. 14 Reps voted with the Dems on the Gang of 8 amnesty bill.

Keep beating them up verbally, not voting, and trying to get them to change things that they have no way of changing without the Senate....we all lose.

We are losing now. We don't have an opposition party that reflects our views. There is a lack of passion and anger that we have a President who bypasses Congress and rules by Executive Order, who selectively enforces the law, and rewrites the law. In previous times, these would be impeachable offenses.

That is like tying someone to a bedpost and insisting they get up and untie themselves and leave...the whiners are the ones who don’t get how politics works, they just like complaining about it.

You are missing the point. Many of us are tired of complaining and want to take action. One way to do that is to stop electing people who don't represent our views. We are tired of voting for the lesser of two evils.

Of course, if the GOP ever gets the Senate would be the time to go after them for change, but until then their hands are tied!

How silly are you? Why would we expect any difference from a Rep controlled Senate than we did from a Rep controlled House. The House just passed a clean debt ceiling blank check for a year with only 18 Reps voting for it. Is that what it means to control the House--passing legislation with a small minority of the Reps and the rest Dems? Can you ever recall that happening under Pelosi or any other Dem Speaker for that matter? Finally, even with control of the Senate, the Reps' hands are tied. Unless the GOP controls the WH, nothing will happen.

No one says you should change your opinions, just quit trying to defeat the GOP....you don’t have the votes for your own party, yet, and now is not the time to “shoot all the rest of us in the foot” by helping the democrats.

Who is the GOP? We just had a GOP retreat and the leadership came out with its principles on comprehensive immigration reform that includes amnesty and a huge boost in legal permanent immigration and guest worker programs at a time when 20 million Americans are unemployed or underemployed. The majority of Reps are against it, do who is shooting whom in the foot. Immigration will now be a major issue in the Fall thanks to these "principles" that will be used against every Rep candidate.

You are a GOP apologist who belongs to the Rodney King school of thought, i.e., can't we all get along? No, the stakes are too high. And exactly who is attacking whom? Remember the Rep attacks against Ted Cruz and his mini-filibuster from the likes of Peter King or McCain? Or the insults hurled by McCain, Graham, and Rove that anyone who was against amnesty was a nativist and bigot? Or John Boehner blaming the Reps for the government shutdown or saying that the debt ceiling had to be raised so we didn't default. Or Boehner attacking conservative talk radio and right wing think tanks. These are the people who have formed a circular firing squad. Conservatives and the Tea Party are the enemies.

Boehner wouldn't be the Speaker without the conservatives and the Tea Party.

The Democrats are your Tyrannical enemies. WAKE UP: After the GOP has won the election is the time to insist on the changes you want, now is time to come together to win.

Same refrain every election. Vote for the RINOs, hope for the best, and then be disappointed. The GOPe would rather lose than see a conservative win. In VA, the Rep Lt. Governor refused to endorse Cuccinelli and the Rep mayor of Virginia Beach, endorsed McAwful.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Now is the time for doing something different. We need a real alternative.

You are your own worst enemy... I am NOT your enemy. FR is not a republican site and has NEVER been a republican site. It is the premiere Conservative site on the web.

The more time passes... the farther away your republican party moves from Conservatism. We have gone along with your party and given it total control in the past... and we also know that your party did nothing but help elect obama and the communists that run America today. We had a republican president that would not... absolutely refused to defend himself and his agenda and those of us that were backing him. He allowed the left to define himself and the party... and he allowed rove to destroy our chances in 2006 and in came harry and nancy... followed by barry soetero.

The republican majority could have cut spending, shrunk government and done away with many Federal agencies. They could have started a plan of paying down the debt and growing the economy. They could have strengthened the Constitution and States Rights but instead... we got a HUGE medicare expansion... two wars and kennedy's "No Child Left Behind". We got open borders and "See you at the signing" Amnesty threats. Your policy has been tried before and failed. You do know that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

I hear this on the morning news this morning and the host casually says...”thank goodness no fighting like the last time...”. Like the pupose of our representatives is simply to just get along!!! I am weary of hearing this “can’t they get along” crap! They are there to represent large numbers of Americans with different values, not get along!

Maybe you should read the front page of FR and the last sentence that requires voting:

Freepers Against Voter Fraud:

‘The whole point of this exercise is to get more conservative voters involved in changing the laws to close loopholes which make it easy to cheat, to promote the enforcement of existing election laws and to take part in the election process at the local level all with the goal of intercepting future fraud campaigns. ****In other words our goal is to STOP THE RATS FROM HIJACKING THE ELECTION PROCESS AND TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK’

WELL YOU CAN’T TAKE THE COUNTRY BACK WITHOUT VOTING AND SUPPORTING THE ONLY OPTION AVAILABLE, AND THAT OPTION THIS ELECTION CYCLE IS THE GOP! So you all are the problem and not the solution...period.

My last warning so Do not send me any more of your drivel!
I’M DONE tryng to reason with losers.
