House passes debt-ceiling increase with no add-ons
CNBC ^

Posted on 02/11/2014 2:35:53 PM PST by Red in Blue PA

This is a developing news story. An earlier version of the article follows:

House GOP leaders announced Tuesday they will advance this week an increase in the government's borrowing cap that's free of any add-ons. A vote is scheduled for Tuesday night because of the threat of a winter storm.

House Speaker John Boehner announced the plan after a poll of the Republican rank and file failed to show enough support for a plan to tie the hike in the debt limit to a plan to reverse a recently passed cut to military pensions.

The Ohio Republican said he expected virtually all of President Barack Obama's Democratic allies to vote for the so-called clean debt cap increase but that he would be one of the few Republicans to back it in the vote.

Time to sit the next election out.

How does that help make things better?

Piece of shit Boehner stabbed us in the back.

And spent more of OUR KIDS’ money, against his prior promises.

The piece of shit must be flushed out of Congress.

Boehner came to power based upon a promise to reduce the debt. He is now increasing our kids’ debt. He is a lying sack of excrement. And a drunk.

I think we could have won something. Just open up a list of really bad spending and cut it from the budget. Obama and Reid spike the bill and then you cave. But at list the list of stupid spending got publicized.

You're right, but the time do that was when the budget bill was up for a vote. It's too late now. This is just about paying for spending that they've already authorized, which is when we lost the fight.

Refusing to pay the credit card bill is not fiscal responsibility. We should instead work to stop running up the bills in the first place.

How does it make things better voting for a party that doesn’t represent your interests and supports policies that will destroy the country?

Thank you for posting this list. They are all democrats with Rs next to their names. But Boehner - OH, Cantor - VA, Rogers - KY, and Wolf - VA should all be in trouble this election year. Yes, I know that except for KY, they are from purple states. They all need to feel the heat anyway, especially Boehner and Cantor.

You sound like Obama. So we should just shut up and let the government continue to use the credit card with no consequence and no limit? Why even have a debt limit vote if it is just rubber stamping what the WH wants and just pays off our credit card with more borrowed money?

The so-called mandatories like the entitlement programs, Medicaid, etc. are on automatic pilot. They comprise two thirds of the budget and will consume more and more of the budget as our population ages. SS has been running in the red since 2010 and Medicare since 2008. The SS DI Trust Fund will be exhausted in 2016. They need to be reformed. But if the Dems are not interested in reforming them, what should the GOP do?

When do the Reps draw a line in the sand and say no more? What difference does it make that the GOP controls the House, which holds the nation's purse strings?

Don’t vote for the incumbent in the primary and vote third party if you must in the general.

Sitting out the election doesn’t help anybody but the opposition.

“It has ceased being the opposition party and made a mockery of why anyone should vote for them to hold on to the House or gain control over the Senate. Time to sit the next election out.”

If there are any conservatives running, I will gladly vote in the next election. More than likely I’ll do something useful instead. Like ironing.

Unless I am wrong, here is a link to the list of the Roll Call vote:

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2014/roll061.xml

Notice the Bill Title is wrong. The Title stating, ‘To designate the air route traffic control center located in Nashua, New Hampshire, as the “Patricia Clark Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center”

The bill to name the air traffic control center in New Hampshire was actually the bill voted on before the debt ceiling bill.

I’m sure it was an innocent mistake to misname the Debt Ceiling bill Roll Call. /s

Here’s the House floor summary: http://clerk.house.gov/floorsummary/floor.aspx

I posted this on the other thread, but I didn’t see anyone post it here yet.

“Either the republicans believe they can win without true conservatives voting, or they simply don’t want to win.”

I think it’s the earlier. They’ve done the electoral math and decided conservatives aren’t worth the grief.

“Where is the voice of our grandchildren in this debt debate? They’re the ones with the most to lose.”

I used to think that, but not any longer. We’ll default long before our grandkids have to deal with it.

I suspect that Boehner had more Republicans who would have voted with him but this was all he needed.

Raise your hand if you took a few moments to write, call or email your or any Republican Representative with thanks and encouragement when they refused to sign the democrats’ Continuing Spending Resolution back on 30 Sep 2013, and Obama shut down the government (but the press said the Republicans did).

They went out on a limb then and I saw a lot of snark here and elsewhere from conservatives who didn’t believe the House Republicans had the gonads to do what they did, and even then belittled their efforts, until, after 3 weeks of being beaten up by both sides, they gave up.

I do agree that Boehner needs to go because he is not assertive enough, does not come over on media interviews well (my observation is he’s never prepared with his party’s talking points like say, Washerwoman-Shultz) which would be pretty easy to do. Those others in leadership like him also need to go (Ryan, Cantor) but if that was fixed AND WE BACKED THEM TO THE HILT—LOUDLY and VOCALLY, like in 2009 with TEA parties everywhere, we would WIN.
