Ice, more snow, threaten to extend Triangle shutdown
News Observer.com ^ | 2/12/14 | BRUCE SICELOFF AND ANDREW KENNEY

Subfreezing temperatures and a night of rain and sleet on top of Wednesday’s snow promise to keep the Triangle largely shut down through Thursday night and possibly into Friday.

The second stage of the storm was setting in even as police and tow trucks tried to clear the vehicles abandoned on the sides of roads and highways Wednesday. Forecasters had predicted the storm for days, prompting Wake County schools to close Wednesday, but the snow seemed to catch thousands off guard, trapping columns of cars on snow-whitened streets and highways.

One year in the late 90’s we had ice storm after ice storm for about a month (in PA). I had a blast with my 4-wheel drive Toyota pickup. I would go out with a six-pack of beer and drive around pulling folks out of ditches on the sides of roads.

Back in the 1980s (don’t recall the year) we had a very bad ice storm here in the DFW area. It took me about 2 hours to drive the 9 miles to work on side roads instead of freeways, as I was in Mgt. and expected to be there. ...........Had an employee who took a couple of vacation days, rented a small backhoe and made a ton of money pulling folks out of ditches or just off of the slick shoulders onto a road.

I always have my GHB and a case of bottled water in my truck.

I was stuck in the belt line traffic around the N. side of Raleigh yesterday.
Went into the Drs. Office at 12:30, not a flake. Came out at 1:30, snowing like mad, roads covered and congested. Took 2 1/2 hrs. to go 2 miles.

I made sure I had a heavy blanket in the car before I left. What did I forget?
A pot to piss in. :)
Was able to make it home before it got to emergency levels.
Note to self. Pack coffee can.:^)

That place is a dammed zoo.

It’s as if someone cut a piece out of Marin County, CA and dropped it in Eastern NC. Having said that, the hospital at Duke is the best I’ve ever seen.

RTP has one of the highest concentrations of engineers, PhDs in hard/computer sciences, and academics in general...It is very atypical to the general NC population.

Haaaay Skooter! Don't look now but I thank we's just been in-sulted!

I couldn't endure a full two years in the “Triangle”.

I had to do two weeks at RTP recently to deliver some training. It was okay. But you are correct...it would get on my nerves after a few months.

Box of granola bars, some jerky, and a flat of water and you are set. I would also put some Tylenol or ibuprofen in in case you get achy from being in the car for an extended period.

Good system you have there!

Interesting. As much as I’ve watched that show(never missed an episode), I never noticed that skyline not looking like Atlanta’s. I would have expected better out of them.

So far, every time a real storm has headed for the Triangle, Triad, Charlotte area the forecast has been off by hours. The storm comes through earlier than forecast, chaos on the roads follow.

Yesterday, it happened to us. I kept telling husband that we needed to head home, he kept telling me we had time. Not so, we ended up making a harrowing 25-mile loop around the lake to get to the one little country road that does not cross a lake inlet before it reaches our road. All the direct routes cross lake inlets and all of them were blocked by multiple disabled vehicles in minutes. Folks around here don’t get driving on icy hills.

I can’t imagine what Raleigh was like. Its a hateful place to drive at best.

LOL

That sounds like my father-in-law. He rails and complains at the first mention of impending snow, but when it hits, he's in his element. He gets in his truck with the the snowplow and goes all over the county, plowing driveways, helping people out of ditches, and just generally having a good time.

Well, I'm just one state up from you, so I guess we folks here in Virginia might be lumped in with you toothless snake handlers in NC.

My former coworkers, and my former employer mourned my decision to leave. I left anyways.

Love the pic. Saved it.

It took me a while to adjust to here. I am the most radical libertarian on the local GUN forum (saying a huge mouthful, there).

Leftists aren’t real bright, despite their academic training. Most of em don’t know any better. I have a bunch of Dukie post grads for clients. Most of them have never heard of Murray Rothbard or von Mises..... kind of like.. uhhhh here on FR, but that is another story.
