A poll released today shows Steve Stockman potentially forcing a runoff in the Republican primary for the US Senate seat currently held by John Cornyn. This news is particularly stunning as Stockman has been almost entirely absent from the campaign trail.
These poll numbers are fairly consistent with the pattern David Dewhurst faced in his campaign against Ted Cruz two years ago. Very few Texas Republican primary voters are aware of Stockman, but they are pretty convinced that Cornyn, one of the Senates most far-right conservatives, is not crazy enough to represent them.
It remains unlikely that Stockman can find a way to win. Hes just as nutty as Ted Cruz, but hes not half as competent. As I wrote after Stockman launched his campaign:
Though Cornyns poll numbers are very weak for an incumbent, it is unlikely that Stockman will do to Cornyn what Cruz did to David Dewhurst. Cruz may be a modern day Confederate, but hes also a politically calculating Ivy Leaguer who knows which fork to use.
Stockman, on the other hand, is a walking disaster. He has earned his place in the political world as an opportunist with a talent for the political grift who is probably incapable of managing the most basic mechanics of a campaign on that scale. Stockman makes Ted Cruz look like a credible leadership figure.
These poll numbers almost certainly reflect the blind throw the bums out logic of the Tea Party rather than any affection for Stockman. That said, like some sort of political herpes, Stockman just wont go away.

... no further comment necessary
This self-described GOPlifer, Chris Ladd, is a Republican precinct committeeman in suburban Chicago. He’s written for David Frum’s blog and the Huffington Post. His energies seem directed at bashing Republican conservatives.
He uses the tag line:
“Because leaving isn’t exactly an option”
Well, Mr. Ladd, then hang on ... you are going for a ride.
It’s still fun to see them be so worried!
This guy isn’t subtle in his hate for TEA, is he?
“Unless lots of Democrats vote in the Republican primary in an attempt to set things up for Democrat victory in the general election, Cornyn should easily win. Most Texas Republicans, such as me, likely wish Cornyn was more like Cruz, but do not want to be represented by a clown like Stockman.”
From what I understand, the democrats also have a primary, which may alleviate that kind of chicanery. Please tell me you’re not voting for Cornyn.
Stovall or Stockman would be better senators than Cornyn. I'm voting for Stovall.

It’s so nice to finally read something that has no bias about the Texas election. /s
In other words, goplifer is an entrenched, Establishment, RINO. Thanks, but, I think we all figured that out.
To: olrtex: If he’s in the run-off election, Steve Stockman will be our Todd Aikin. I understand your sentiments, but it’s not carved in Stone that Stockman will be the run-off opponent for Cornyn. I’ll be voting for Stovall or Vega. I’ve said all along that even though Steve Stockman has been my Congressman both times he “served” (when he wasn’t drunk), I am NOT voting for him. He’s an idiot. But, I’d rather be frustrated by an idiot than be angered by a RINO who kisses Mitch McConnell’s wrinkled, old ass every morning upon waking. That said, I’m sad to say that I don’t think Stockman will defeat Cornyn in the run-off. Stovall? Yes... Vega? Yes... anyone but Stockman? Yes. But, not Stockman. Cornyn and company are holding on to all the trash they have on Stockman, saving it for the run-off. Stockman will lose big if he is the run-off candidate, because many people feel exactly as you do.

What’s up with the snot, nOOb?
Stopped right there. Is the rest worth reading cotton?
bump
That website is full of wacko-birds
Do you prefer to be represented by a clown like McCornyn?
Me too. Far-right maybe compared to Marx or Lenin. Milquetoast to the rest of us.
