Ukraine's western region of Lviv has reportedly declared independence from the central government.
Hours after protesters seized the prosecutor's office in central Lviv and forced a surrender by interior ministry police, the executive committee of the region council - also called the People's Rada claimed control over the region.
"The regime has begun active military action against people. Dozens of people have been killed in Kiev and hundreds have been wounded. Fulfilling the will of society, the executive committee of the Lviv region's council, the People's Rada, is assuming full responsibility for the fate of the region and its citizens," read a statement.
The executive committee was led by Petro Kolodiy, chairman of the Lviv region's council.
Lviv lies close to the border with Poland and was one of the venues for the Euro 2012 football tournament. Over the past months, the city has become a powerful engine driving the insurgency against president Viktor Yanukovich.
The region, which is traditionally hostile to the easterner Yanukovich and favours closer ties with the European Union, has a population of 2.5 million.

Had. Stalin kicked them out and most moved to the parts of Poland gained from Germany after the war.
Half? No. Don’t use Common Core math.
According to the Ukrainian Census of 2001, ethnic Ukrainians make up 77.8% of the population. Other significant ethnic groups are the Russians (17.3%), Belarusians (0.6%), Moldovans (0.5%), Crimean Tatars (0.5%), Bulgarians (0.4%), Hungarians (0.3%), Romanians (0.3%), Poles (0.3%), Jews (0.2%), Armenians (0.2%), Greeks (0.2%) and Tatars (0.2%). The industrial regions in the east and southeast are the most heavily populated, and about 67.2 percent of the population lives in urban areas.
The Crimea is going to be the sticking point...It is very strategically important. It was part of the Russian SSR, until Khrushchev gave it to the Ukraine SSR in the 50s.
Brace Yourself
Prepare yourself for the Hate you are about to receive on this thread...
Pilsudski would have been halfway to Kiev by now.
Ukraine map Here. It's bigger than I thought.
“Hate?” Isn’t that a lib term for “someone disagrees with me?”
Funny... I must have missed Obama scrambling to get in front of the nearest camera to support the “Slavic Spring”.
Was that King Solomon presiding over a case, who came up with the judgement to split the baby? :)
The EU ‘wants’ the Ukraine because the pipelines pass through the Ukraine? The pipelines already pass to and through Europe. If the Ukraine email was where most of Russian oil came from, you’d be on to something, but it doesn’t. It would be like Ohio taking over Illinois because oil pipelines run thru.
Darn autocorrect, don’t know where ‘emails’ came from. :)
“ZeroHedge summed this up pretty nicely.. “
Wow...the word “aorta” comes to mind.
Sorry, minimum order for a Muslim is a gross.
Darn, I was just on the cia factbook before I asked that. I guess I was asking for conjecture whether there were enough there to try and create a separatist region.
“Western Ukraine has a lot of ethnic Poles.”
Only 200-300 thousand are left there.

There’s no reason to hate someone for believing something that’s demonstrably untrue. Sometimes you’ve just got to move along. It’s like when leftists accuse the Koch brothers of being the hidden conspirators behind every single cause they give any attention. I guarantee you that there’s a DU thread somewhere accusing the Kochs of being the real powers behind either one of or both sides of the Ukrainian conflict.
I don’t think the Poles would intervene militarily in Ukraine: but if Russia thinks they’d just roll over and play dead if the Baltic (NATO) states are attacked, she is very much mistaken.
