NFL could introduce 15-yard penalty for racial slur: Report

The NFL could be set for a radical rule change.

The new penalty, which will be automatic 15-yards if a player uses the N-word, is set to be introduced during the league’s owner’s meetings in March, according to a CBS Sports report.

John Wooten, who heads up the Fritz Pollard Alliance which pays attention to diversity in the NFL, says he expects the NFL’s competition committee to suggest creating a rule penalizing players who use the N-word.

The rule would also include the potential for players to get ejected from the game, if they use the word a second time.

Wooten, who was at the NFL Combine on Friday, said he wants to completely erase the word from being used in the NFL.

"I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do,” he said. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room. Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."

The NFL has yet to comment on Wooten’s idea, but he remains extremely hopeful the rule will be passed because “there is too much disrespect in the game”.

Well you know that none of the “Crackas” will benefit from this. The will amount to an official Race Card to be pulled out whenever needed.

“Just enforce the existing rules.”

Exactly. We really are becoming a land of just grievances. It’s tedious in the extreme.

What if they say “cracker” or “whitie”? Would that be a 15 yard penalty?

How about that . . . hate crimes (white on black only, of course) in the NFL. Let’s see . . . lotsa’ pink crap all over the NFL, kickoffs backed up so “nobody gets hurt”, lotsa’ studies and stuff about “horrible” head injuries in the NFL, homosexuals openly bragging about being in the stockrooms with normal guys, etc.

The “chick-a-fying and sissypantsing of our great game.

>>The NFL has become a doooooshbag league.<<

Now that gay guys are allowed to be in the NBA and NFL men’s locker room I demand I be allowed to shower in the women’s tennis locker room.

It is the same thing.

Note I didn’t demand to be in the WNBA locker room showers — it would look the same as the men’s showers (although the men’s probably has less arm, back, leg and facial hair).

re: they're different words

They are:

nigger: any person with dark skin; deemed a vulger and offensive term

niggardly: (2nd definition) meanly insufficient; scanty.

niggle: to occupy oneself with trifles

So I could say that people who get so bent out of shape about the word "nigger" are niggardly and like to niggle.

>>“Niggardly” is completely unrelated to “the N-word.”<<

And there is no replacement word. “Niggardly” isn’t the same as “cheap” nor “miserly” — it means meting out allocated resources in a very diminished manner.

Orwell was right — own the language, own the discussion.

Wouldn’t a racial slur be unsportsmanlike conduct? Just enforce the existing rules.

Yes but Roger Goodell needs a new offering to his idol, political correctness.

So will the Redskins be penalized for saying their name?

I think that some people are starting to connect the dots. There is a bigger agenda in play than controlling the foul mouths of the players.

I agree with youse guys. Just political correctness, more oblations to the gods of PC to atone for the sins committed on our behalf by Richie Incognito.

I work the chain gang at high school football games. When the more “urban” teams come to town, that word is said about every 30 seconds. They even call white players by that name.

You beat me to it, that’s exactly what I was thinking, that sneering would be next.

As far as the rule changes go, I HATE!!!! the BS about “crossing the plane of the end zone”, I’ve seen way too many of the TD’s called because some guy runs OOB on the six inch line but holds the ball over the pylon... how in hell is that a TD? All it proves is he’s got arms like a bigfoot.

I actually like the change where in OT, if one team scores on the first possession, the other team actually gets a chance. Previously, all a team had to do was come out, rack up 25 or 30 yards, and kick a field goal.

The business about bad hits and personal fouls, they are calling that one too much.

And holding. I never understood holding. Saw interviews with defensive players and offensive guys and they say “There is holding on EVERY PLAY. Period.” so it’s kind of subjective about whether it gets called or not.

All last season, safeties had choice words for Riley Cooper after a tackle. Betcha the league will rule the terms used in those circumstances to be discussions of favorite baked snacks and not slurs.

Seriously, this opens an enormous can of worms. Referees will now be required to monitor on-field language? And make value judgements based on half-heard fragments of speech among the deafening crowd noise?

Just another indication of the societal softening of America and an assault on freedom to express one’s views in the workplace. If this rule were to be adopted by the NFL, then it would be also adopted by other sports leagues and find its way into everyone’s workplace where employees would be reprimanded for using that word.
