The NFL could be set for a radical rule change.
The new penalty, which will be automatic 15-yards if a player uses the N-word, is set to be introduced during the league’s owner’s meetings in March, according to a CBS Sports report.
John Wooten, who heads up the Fritz Pollard Alliance which pays attention to diversity in the NFL, says he expects the NFL’s competition committee to suggest creating a rule penalizing players who use the N-word.
The rule would also include the potential for players to get ejected from the game, if they use the word a second time.
Wooten, who was at the NFL Combine on Friday, said he wants to completely erase the word from being used in the NFL.
"I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do,” he said. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room. Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."
The NFL has yet to comment on Wooten’s idea, but he remains extremely hopeful the rule will be passed because “there is too much disrespect in the game”.

I’d like to see them get a 15 yard penalty for wearing pink instead.
But, I thought that was a term of endearment when used by those with the protective coloration. They seem to use it upon one another all the time!

Since the NFL is about 70% African-American, I suspect that the N-word is said more often by N-words to other N-words which I thought was not offensive (aka the “Richard Pryor rule”). So does this mean that the penalty only comes when whites or Latinos use the N-word? If so, isn’t that discriminatory?
And, besides, what white fool is going to use the N-word when he’s decidedly outnumbered and is going to have to shower with multiple N-words after the game?
And what if the offender claims he was misquoted?
Plus with at least one gay player in the NFL next year, should they ban gay slurs too? I’m guessing the c-s-word gets set a lot in the heat of battle. Will that be considered a gay slur since most gays s- c-?
They could be spending more time marching off penalties than playing football.
So, will be enforced across the board? And what about the term “Redskin”?
A penalty that applies to only the dozen or so whites left in the NFL, or to all skin colors?
