Maria von Trapp, whose family's story was told in The Sound of Music, has died.

She was the last surviving member of the musical family of seven brothers and sisters and passed away in her sleep at home in Vermont at the age of 99 on Tuesday, PEOPLE confirms.

Von Trapp, who was the second-eldest daughter, and her family fled their home in Austria to escape from the Nazis in the 1930s and eventually ended up in the U.S., where their story inspired a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical and the popular 1965 movie starring Julie Andrews.

Yup. We are in the presence of the evil one since 2008 so we can relate...

“Life became increasingly difficult as they witnessed hostility towards Jewish Republican children by their classmates, the use of children against their parents, the advocacy of abortion by both Maria's doctor and by her son's school, and finally by the induction of Georg into the German Navy.

Once Charlie Rangle gets his way with reintroducing the Draft, exactly how are the Democrats different from the Nazis?

Whoa, I had no idea the beautiful and lovely Julie Andrews version of Maria von Trapp was actually Jack Klugman in disguise.

Agreed. von Trapp was one of the most brilliant Submarine commanders of World War I. He would’ve been a major asset to Admiral Doenitz in the German Navy. Thank goodness he defected.

Kind of a blessing, in a way... If I heard “Doe, a deer, a female deer...” one more time I’d be ready to climb a clock tower somewhere with a bunch of water balloons full of coyote urine...

That method {using Do Ra Me etc} at one time was used in many churches in the U.S. The congregation didn't sing the words to Hymns but rather sang phonetic notes. The name of it escapes me but I remember my grandmother singing like that sometimes. She was born in the late 1800's. It may have been something more common in Appalachia.

I don’t remember all the particulars, but somehow, through a connection through one of the Notre Dame nuns in our high school had with the Trapp family...our school performed the *Sound of Music* on stage at the Bushnell B4 it opened on Broadway. Quite a remarkable experience for a bunch of teenagers.

My reaction too. I’m trying to behave on the day of her transition, but Whoa Nelly. At first I thought I was seeing a poorly done photoshop montage.

The Maria Von Trapp who passed away this week and is in this photo was NOT the Maria portrayed by Julie Andrews.

Maria von Trapp who passed away this week was one of the children of Georg von Trapp's first marriage.
