Traffic cameras could generate $18 mil for Lubbock County(Texas)

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Traffic cameras have watched Lubbock streets before, but within six months, they were gone.

That was five years ago, but the option may be back on the table. This time, it could be speeding cameras throughout Lubbock County.

Recently, Lubbock County was approached by American Traffic Solutions about installing speeding cameras in the county's school zones. That's the same company that put up Lubbock's controversial red light cameras in 2008.

But before the option is even considered, Precinct One commissioner Bill McCay tells us they're weighing every option.

"If there's something broken that needs to be fixed, then great, if its something that's not broken, then why try to fix it," McCay said.

McCay believes the first step is meeting with each district to decide if this is needed.

"We need to know and understand what each particular school district situation is," McCay said.

According to American Traffic Solutions, these cameras would come at no cost to the county. It could actually mean nearly $18 million in revenue for Lubbock County after they split ticket revenue with the company 50/50.

"It's too early to tell. I don't know. It's not about revenue, it's about public safety," Precinct Two commissioner Mark Heinrich said.

While Heinrich says it's supposed to be about safety, his opponent in the Republican Primary has questions.

"What are the motives are behind this? Whether it's really about safety, or if it's about profit for this company," John David Bruegel said.

But for now, McCay says any decision is a long way off.

"It may be great, but we're a long ways from that," McCay said.

This year, Brick Twp, NJ became the first NJ town to shut down the red light program. Some of this is due to the link below, but the mayor was made to realize this was much more about revenue, and very little due to safety.

I didn’t think Texas allowed municipal speed cameras (red light cameras are fairly common in this part of the state).

“””I am amazed here how the Maryland patrol cars are so sneaky, designed stealthy(jet black and small with flat lights) ,and many use unmarked cars to trap drivers, yet not a peep over that by my fellow drivers.””””

That’s because those cars, driven by REAL COPS, actually give a ticket to the DRIVER of the vehicle. The cameras send a ticket to the OWNER of the vehicle. I don’t have any vehicles that are licensed in my name. Does that mean I can break the law without any consequences?

Austin was looking into installing some a few years ago. To the best of my knowledge, it never happened. There are a few red light cameras at high risk intersections.

Those cams just send fines no points. So its a crime as much as not buying Obama-care is a crime.

If the owner starts getting fines then maybe he/she had bad judgment associating with you, in that case, and needs to take action.

who gets the fines when you illegally park?

Does that mean you can illegally park with no consequences?

Does that mean you can kill someone with no consequences?

Does that mean you rhetorical question makes no sense?

So the owner of the vehicle becomes responsible for the actions of a vehicle. Is that it? Defacto cop?

Cameras are for revenue collection only. They have nothing to do with safety.

Now?

Who gets the fine when you illegally park your friends and relatives cars? Is that new?

A parking ticket isn’t a moving violation. Why are you in favor of the government using cameras as a revenue stream?

Revenue collection from stupid people though, similar to the state lottery.

Beats raising income taxes or property taxes.

All they have to do to NOT pay is to not break traffic laws when in view of those cams(or not loan their cars to idiots) . Its very simple.

RE :”Why are you in favor of the government using cameras as a revenue stream?”

No, the relevant question is of all the things the state government does to me why would I let this bother me?

We got red light cams and speed cams here, for years. Never got a fine from them, and don't expect to. In fact they pulled many red light cams out of here because not enough idiots ran them.

My phone app warns me when I approach one.

And I don't loan my cars to idiots who run up fines.

RE :”Did I accidentally log in to Democraticunderground?”

Why are you endlessly whining about this?

I know real here people who I specifically warned them about the location of speed cams (they are in school zones only) and even showed them pictures of what the cam looks like I took on my phone, and those same people later told me that they got (in some cases more than one) a fine for going over 10 MPH over past that same cam, after being specifically warned.

This is my real life experience, unfortunately.

People that stupid don't deserve protection from themselves.

So you are in favor of big government and using a camera instead of a law enforcement officer. What is your screen name over at DailyKos?

I have a problem with the guilty till proven innocent part. They don’t always get the right car.

I guess Texas isn’t really as “different” as Texans would like the rest of us to believe. I mean they DO have Wendy Davis running for Governor.

Truly one of the dumbest posts ever

They never send the ticket to “you”, the offender. They send the ticket to the owner of the vehicle. It is all about revenue and has nothing to do with law enforcement...

I have no problem with the laws on the books being enforced... if 'taxing' people who think they're above the law by ticketing them is happening - good for the city. Saves the rest of us from paying higher taxes.

RE :”I have a problem with the guilty till proven innocent part. They don’t always get the right car.”

The red light cams are more cut and dried here.
The photo must catch the light and the car position and tag.

I can imagine with the speed photos that a system could report an incorrect speed, as that depends on the system, making it harder to contest(still have to have the photo).

Here you must go >10 over speed limit to get a fine.

Most people know they did it(here), certainly all the ones I talked to,.
