Video: Rubio rips Cuba, Venezuela … and Tom Harkin
Hot Air ^ | February 25,2014 | ED MORRISSEY

The U.S. Senator from Florida had listened patiently to Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa speak favorably about his recent trip to Cuba, all the while omitting any real references to the oppression of the totalitarian government there.

To Rubio, like many Cuban exiles and their descendants, it was too much to bear.

“Let me tell you what the Cubans are really good at,” Rubio said Monday when he took to the Senate floor. “What they are really good at is repression…They have exported repression in real time, in our hemisphere, right now.”

This wasn’t some Cold War-era fulmination about Castro’s regime.

Rubio’s speech was about current events: the protests in Venezuela, the Maduro government and the ties it has with the Castros, who repress their own people and helped inspire the suppression in Caracas.

Venezuela is becoming the new Cuba.

For 14 minutes and 16 seconds, Rubio gave the best oration of his political career, speaking largely off the top of his head and with only the barest of notes. Rubio sometimes dripped with sarcasm or simmered with indignation as he made the case to Congress that the United States needs to continue Cuba sanctions and punish Venezuela.

I'm not as harsh on Rubio as the total backstabbers. I think he got to DC a little bit naive, armed with his upbringing that Cubans have contributed positively to the FL economy. I'm not sure he knew the full impact the invasion is having on the US. And what did Schummer and McCain do? Marginalize and compromise him.

He shouldn't have fallen for it, for sure. but it's not like Ayotte, Flake, Ryan, and all of the other sellouts who shouldn knnow better. Is he presidential material? No, that Cuban American will be Ted Cruz.

But you know what? I forgive Marc Rubio because he stood by Ted Cruz for those magnificent 21 hours and because he has voted with constitutional conservatives constantly, now that the lines are drawn.

If enough illegals are given amnesty - who’s to say America doesn’t turn into another Venezuela?

That is an example of why we need to nominate those who actually BELIEVE what they say in a stump speech. You can be passionate and forceful about what is a visceral belief to you, but you can’t if it when you are parroting what the political consultants tell you to say. And guess what, if you are intellectually honest and truthful in your speaking, you will be far more persuasive, unlike when someone regurgitates politically correct verbal swill that no one really believes.

Shut up Rubic’s Cube. The United States has built up a Nazi-style police state, surveillance that would make Mao green with envy, and virtually every one of our GOD-given rights are all but compromised. Not to mention we're on the verge of economic and financial collapse.

Most of this done when you and your RINO buddies had more than ample time to stop it. Forget the self-righteous crap and look in the mirror.

You think being harsh on marco is tantamount to ‘backstabbing’? You need to go back and find out what the consequences of amnesty will be to this country.

Your loyalties are misguided, at best.

I'm totally opposed to the invasion of the US. Read what I wrote again....Marco Rubio is not at the backstabber level of the worst, he stands by Ted Cruz, and he's been reliably constitutional coservative since his sellout on the invasion destroyed his future promise.

What I said is I thought he got to DC a little bit naive about how passionate those of us out of FL feel about the invasion of the US.

Nice to know that I’m not alone. I’ve always liked Rubio, but the immigration thing bothered me. One because while current policy needs adjustment, and enforcement should be serious, “comprehensive” opens up legislative cans of worms.

What bothered me most was that Rubio helped get the immigration push started, but then lost all control to Schumer and crew. Not sure that he had any part of control to start with, either.

Over time, I’ve chalked it up to learning experience. The House and Senate are tough to learn, and no one understands in the first year or two. No great conspiracy, just complications of normal (good or bad) politics. I’ve come to think he’s quite smart, has the right philosophies, and will do well for us.

To: Hojczyk; All
I have a question for everyone. My husband, is a conservative and tells everyone I am a right wing extreme conservative, as he smile at me. I am. I am first and foremost a Christian. I was trying to figure out how we make every illegal leave. 20-25 million or so?

We all know we MUST first close the borders. Then what? We tell illegals to go home and when they don't? What about the people who have been here 20-25 years or more. Do we send ice agents to there homes and dump them across the border? We watch as their grown children and the grandchildren who were born here, have there grandparents shipped to Mexico?

CNN, NBC,...sets up cameras of crying families packing, telling the camera I paid taxes and raised my children here.....how will this look in real life? You know the media will only talk to those who paid taxes and can prove it and not to gang members or criminals. I know I'm being provocative, but we need to be realistic. How will this work? If we ship every illegal home, which we won't be able to do even if my guy, Ted Cruz wins. Do we have the stomach for this? I know they broke the law, but the government hasn't done anything about it and I expect they will say, you wait until I've been here 20+ years and now tell me I have to leave, we figured if you were serious you would have come 20 years ago. Yes, these people are wrong, but so are the politician's who did nothing, the people who hired them for cheap labor.

The illegals who arrived in the last 15 years, are a big problem. Gang ties, crimes, welfare.... Do we need to look at this closer? If we do this wrong, we might never win another election. I know, we do need to follow the law; we should have decades ago. It is what it is. Now what? And in case any smart*#% asks, no I'm not Rove, or Ryan or ..... I just want a real discussion on how we handle this and what it will look like when we do it. I know some will say we don't care what it looks like, just follow the law. We're way past that for some people. This is a complicated answer that no one knows how to answer. Remember how rino romney answered? Self deportation. We've got to give a better answer than that.

Rubio jumped the shark on immigration. Perhaps I might forgive him at some point in the future, maybe. But he really screwed up, big time. Are you getting this Rand Paul? You seem a little wobbly too from time to time.

Long past time for that old commie-loving Harkin to slink off the Senate floor. Maybe he can join Dingel in retirement.
