White House Sets New Limits on Junk Food Ads in Schools: Part of Michelle's "Let's Move" initiative

The Obama administration laid out new restrictions on the marketing of junk food and sugary drinks in schools on Tuesday.

The new rules from the White House and the Department of Agriculture prohibit advertisements for unhealthy foods on school campuses during the school day, including sugary drinks that account for 90 percent of such ads in school. An ad for regular Coca-Cola, for example, would be banned from appearing on a scoreboard at a high school football game, though ads for Diet Coke and Dasani water, owned by the same company, would be allowed. Junk food ads like a Coca-Cola scoreboard would be phased out under the new rules and would not have to be replaced overnight.

“The idea here is simple—our classrooms should be healthy places where kids aren’t bombarded with ads for junk food,” First Lady Michelle Obama said in a statement. “Because when parents are working hard to teach their kids healthy habits at home, their work shouldn’t be undone by unhealthy messages at school.”(continued)

The US Department of Education has the ultimate say-so over every school of any kind within the states and territories of the United States. PERIOD.

It was a mistake when it started and is an even bigger mistake today and needs to be done away with altogether.

IMO, the most pathetic thing is that the
rare pol that suggests eliminating crap like that, departments/agencies at a time, and is actually serious about following through on it, gets mocked by some of the very people who go on the internet and piss moan holler and complain about those exact agencies.

Note the PDS on the Palin threads with ‘staunch’ right wingers repeating all the lib arguments against her. Just as an example. Oh sure, they SAY they back her on the issue, then find 8 million reasons to make sure she never sees elected office.

How odd...isn’t that EXACTLY the same game the GOP plays with voting? Say they back X issue, then do all they can to make sure it does not get voted on...or only vote in the affirmative when the issue is doomed to failure and vice versa?

Yup. It is.

You won’t get an argument from me on anything you’ve stated here.

It just stunes my beiber that something/things like this, so obvious, get glossed over or ignored so often.

If anyone wanted to win, all they have to do is make an issue of the stuff. Pretty hard for the RINOs to deny it when there are years of them all doing exactly that to grind their noses in like a bad puppy. But so few contenders ever drop the Queensbery rules BS and fight like they mean it...then wonder why no one rallies to their cause.
