'Slow-poke’ bill aims to stop left lane lingerers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | Aaron Gould Sheinin

Those who lollygag in the left lane of highways and interstates could be ticketed under legislation approved in the state House on Wednesday. House Bill 459, by Rep. Bill Hitchens, R-Rincon, was approved 162-9.

The bill makes it a misdemeanor for any driver on a divided highway who does not move to the right when a car going faster approaches from behind.

If so you will be guilty of enabling someone to exceed the speed limit even more.

Guilty of letting someone pass you? Do you think that is a crime? Do you think you need to chase them down if they do get past you?

My problem is with people who drive slow in the right lane - 10 miles an hour.

The fast lane is where the radar is focused and where tickets are issued.

Well the left lane would be for passing if it weren’t for people who apparently think it’s for sight-seeing.

Is there a different speed limit for the left lane?
The current speed limits are valid, even if they are not enforced.

Is this legislation going to make it legal to speed up and sit on the rear bumper of a car that is going the legal limit?

As usual, most legislation is not thought out.

Trucks usually drive in the right lanes. As a result, the right lane is usually bumpy and filled with potholes.

If I'm driving the speed limit in the left lane, and you want to drive 15 MPH over the speed limit, you are welcome to drive around me.

It passes the libertarian test. Your right to saunter in the left lane, ends when my front bumper approaches your rear bumper.

I agree with that, but nonetheless, I think it’s a good idea.

And before somebody gets on me about being all “big government”, government is in charge of our roads. Nearly everybody wants government to take care of the roads. And when governments elected by people are in charge of roads, the people DO get to determine, by measures such as these, that the PASSING LANE is actually used for PASSING.

And supporting a left-lane law does not mean I’m about to start supporting anti-smoking laws, or the War on Drugs, or laws regulating trans-fats, sugar, etc.

Fine with me as long as you at least move over for faster traffic otherwise you are just causing a chaotic bottleneck behind you.

Look behind you sometime when you're cruising along happily in the left lane at the traffic stacking up. You're actually a road hazzard.

That doesn't answer the question.

TonyM ~ Even if you yourself are exceeding the speed limit by say 5 MPH? If so you will be guilty of enabling someone to exceed the speed limit even more.

Cowboy Bob ~ What if you are in the left lane, driving the speed limit, and some jerk comes along doing 10-15 MPH over the speed limit. Do you still have to pull over?

Yes. And if you are a cop, you can then pull them over and ticket them.

Even if they are in the actual process of giving birth in the front seat.

Or do you have the psychic ability to know, just know, that everyone speeding near you is not in the middle of a life threatening emergency?

the problem is these public roads are socialism

so you will always have shortages and problems in socialism. there are too many cars on the roads which cause problems. if the government had free supermarkets the same thing day long lines, low quality service , horrible people. if you paid for private roads you'd get the service you want. but for what we pay in taxes we pay more for the free roads than we would in capitalism(look at the Dollar tree, Aldi’s , walmart , amazon , etc). so you have the cattle bunched up together fighting each other in the corral begging their government masters to keep the other cows in line , begging for more government. as is their intent to make slave of us

Great! GA drivers have an irritating habit of driving abreast of the vehicle in the next (right) lane. At least they do down here in middle GA.

“Making this a criminal offense rather than a traffic infraction is a bit harsh.”

Not really; they should be executed.

I thought that the state that posted the speed limit decided for everyone.

Where or not you are a law-abiding driver is your personal choice.

Many states already have this law, and the speed cops never enforce it.

The source of the problem is unjustifiably low speed limits, which gives the left lane bandits a sense of righteousness because they’re at least following the limit.
