Careful. Maybe he's carrying a concealed gun
Chicago Tribune ^ | 27 feb 2014 | Gary Rogaliner

Posted on 02/27/2014 7:08:08 AM PST by rellimpank

Recently, I completed the classroom portion of the new Illinois concealed carry licensingrequirement. I then traveled to the firing range with my classmates and passed the live-fire training by destroying a practice target with 30 rounds of 9 mm ammunition fired from three distances. Having had my fingerprints and a recent picture of myself scanned into the Illinois State Police database, completing the online registration form and paying my fee, I submitted my application. In 90 days or less I expect to receive my concealed carry permit and will be able to legally carry a loaded firearm on my person when I leave my house. Will I actually carry my gun when I go to the coffee shop or grocery store or wherever? Maybe, maybe not. You'll never know and that is the point.

“destroyed” that practice target, did you?

Reading between the lines, I think what the big shot is REALLY saying is, “my groups weren’t so tight”. :-)

In South Dakota, it is 5 days (or less) and $10 which you don’t pay if you don’t get approved.

Indiana too. And we are considered a pretty "liberal" state with gun rights.

(Please note the proper use of liberal in this context.)

It makes me wonder if anybody in this process is disqualified for poor marksmanship. What’s the average distance for a civilian defending themselves with a pistol? Ten feet?

I have heard of a few here in TX. It seems that in every class of 10 to 20 there’s one that is either barely passes, or fails.

The precision requirements are pretty lax, though... if you can’t clear the bar, you probably *shouldn’t* have a CCW permit.

—and , amusing to me anyway, sits right there below Wisconsin (the next to last) which now has 200,000 concealed weapons permittees with almost zero firearms offenses-—but I have not seen one word about this in the two Chicago garbage wraps-—

My chl class had one older lady who failed the live-fire portion. So she had to pop open another box of 50 rounds, and tried again. I'm pretty sure the law doesn't limit the number of tries you get.

Wow. In Texas my son-in-law passed and submitted the week before Thanksgiving. Still hasn’t got it. The state website still doesn’t even show that they are processing yet. He called 2 weeks ago and they blame the delay on the lowering of classroom hours to an increase in takers. Still the state says 8 weeks max on the issue. There is no excuse for this.

Wisconsin does not require fingerprints or a picture.

I think all states should go with Constitutional carry, but shall issue is a step in the right direction.

At least in Texas you can still carry in the car loaded without the license as long as it is concealed. You just can’t carry on your person (and get caught).

We had a person fail their shooting qualification when I went through my first CFL class. It was a person who brought a newly purchased handgun she had never fired in a caliber she had never fired.

TX Shooting Qualification (using standard B27 targets)

3 yards, 20 rounds

1 shot, 2 seconds, 5 times
2 shots, 3 seconds, 5 times
5 shots, 10 seconds, 1 time

7 yards, 20 rounds

5 shots, 10 seconds, 1 time
2 shots, 4 seconds, 1 time
3 shots, 6 seconds, 1 time
1 shot, 3 seconds, 5 times
5 shots, 15 seconds, 1 time

15 yards, 10 rounds

2 shots, 6 seconds, 1 time
3 shots, 9 seconds, 1 time
5 shots, 15 seconds, 1 time

Went to one last Saturday. Everyone was polite, but the police were there to hold concealed weapons while you were in the building. Seems kind of strange.

I had two in my renewal class that failed the shooting portion.

Everything I have read over the years says 10-20 feet is the average range. But if you sit back and think about it, most would actually occur at 2 feet or less where any type of physical struggle is taking place(i.e. rape, car jacking, robbery, etc.). The only way I’m firing at the 20 ft. range is if I’m cornered or in my own home. Otherwise, I’m high tailing it out of there.

25 yards with a pistol? Are you bringing in your own pistol? What if it’s a snub .44? Nobody is hitting anything at 25 yards with a short barrel revolver unless the target is the size of a UPS truck.

You need more practice with a good 2 inch revolver hitting various targets out to a hundred yards or further is very possible. I shot a coyote with one shot, double action 32 long steps away after running a mile. I shot another yote with a 3.5 inch 9mm at 49 yards with a rest.

practice, practice, practice.
