BUBBLING UP – Dick & Dee Dee: “Thou Shalt Not Steal”

John Loudermilk, whose cousin was my battalion CO at Fort Lewis, was a successful Country writer who often crossed over to Pop. He had a vocal hit of his own in 1960 but never repeated that success. This song has a truly arresting production.

Dick & Dee Dee: “Thou Shalt Not Steal”

A big hit in Southern California, but it doesn't make the playlists at "oldies" stations.

Publius is correct. Paul was steady dating model Jane Asher and her brother was Peter, Paul’s presumed future brother-in-law. He gave the duo his song thinking it was a throwaway. It was Peter and Gordon’s first single in February of 1964 and went to #1 in the UK. By June it was #1 on Billboard and Cashbox in North America. Imagine Paul’s Homer Simpson “D’oh!” when his own song dethroned The Beatles from their perpetual #1 slot on both sides of the pond.

#8 – The Ad Libs: “The Boy from New York City”

This was George “Shadow” Morton’s R&B label out of the Brill Building, and he got Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller to produce this group’s only hit.

One of the reasons I believe Del Shannon's version of "I Go to Pieces" was recorded in 1963 was its use of kettle drums, which soon fell out of fashion. Peter & Gordon's version, from 1965, uses no kettle drums. Here are some tunes from 1963 feature kettle drums:

America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi!

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)
