Texas high school's $60 million stadium has 'extensive cracking'

In the Dallas suburb of Allen, the local high school made national headlines in 2012 when it unveiled its $60 million football stadium.

But less than two years later, there's a major problem.

Allen Independent School District officials announced at a news conference on Thursday that the stadium has "extensive cracking" in the concourse and will close for repairs.

They put down a a $1 million dollar atificial field here in Kerrville at Antler Stadium. I’d rather they just bought huge tracts of land and put in a shooting range - golf course AND Football Field.

When I moved to a small Central Texas city in the early 80s I drove past a huge football stadium. I asked the guys at work what college was there in town. I was informed it was the high school stadium. And it’s one of the smaller ones.

I see cracking concrete pretty often on new pours..

I’m told that there is usually a explanation, mostly to do with weather at the time of the pour, and sometimes design issues because of a missing expansion joint or two...occassionaly a bad mix..

This part of Texas takes their highschool football very seriously, so the contractors insurance and the cities insurance will probably foot a large part of the bill. They are not going to be very happy about it..

Cracks probably started early on.....

The folks in the city of Katy, Texas voted down a $70 million dollar stadium last year.

There’s an old saying about concrete. Three things will happen.

1) It’ll harden.
2) It’ll turn gray.
3) It’ll crack.

My guess is they were to crooked/cheap to actually pay for any QC testing.

The taxpayers better hope the school district contracted for project management and that the school district did not take on that role itself.

We all know that Government Agencies are ‘smarter’ than us peons and the 10% (or whatever) they saved they allocated as bonuses for themselves for being so smart.

Coincidence(?) another thread near this one is about a Crack in a Dam....

Now THEY could be in for some big time problems...

The cracks were noticed almost as soon as the stadium opened and have been getting larger (some reported to be 3/4 inch).

They also mention other potential problems with the structure.

I suspect the extreme drought and high temps.

On a lot of commercial pours they float them in water to retard the cure time. Keep it flooded for a few weeks makes a huge difference in cure strength.

It has been 120+ years since we have had a drought like the one we are just coming out of. The last time was in 1895. My ancestors were here then. This one may be worse than then. Pretty bad.

“It is called insane stupidity. No wonder, American pubic (sic) schools are such a failure.”

Disgusting - he says “American ‘pubic’ schools”. How much longer, Lord, do we have to put up with this constant bashing of our country from a man who left years ago? He has just gravely insulted every public school in this country with a disgusting word, then labels them all as being a failure - I am sick and tired of this man trashing our country.

If there is a government liberal “plant” on FR to trash our life in this country, then no better one could be found than this man.

Every single day he insults us and this country. Is there no end to this? Does he have a life time guarantee of saying any hatred thing he wants about us and this country? He hates this country and said if the Philippines became a state of the US, he would leave there. Total rejection of this country - I say he is a troll here to destroy and he has no redeeming value.

My father oversaw the construction of the local gymnasium. They flooded the pour for several weeks covered with plastic to cure the concrete. It has lasted well.

It is pretty sandy here, but a few miles away there is expanding clay soil. That is a challenge to pour concrete and have no cracking. Wet to dry expansion and contraction is incredible in it.

Thank goodness it was probably built with union labor.

If they had gone with the best construction company there'd be no problem.

But they likely went with Soprano and son, inc.

Especially for a HS. If it were a college that generated money , but a HS?

I agree... This stadium is bigger than most Community Collage or most College stadiums that I have seen.

One thing I have noted about Texas is that we are generally anti-tax. However, when it comes to football, Texans will open their pockets and say, "How much more, sir!"

The City of Allen is running the stadium and it is expected to generate revenue. Keep in mind that the city government is a separate entity from the school district. The city has scheduled concerts and has hosted other events, including HS championship games. That does generate revenue. The stadium is expected to be closed, at least through June. That is a huge hit on the revenue.

Follow the money. Betcha the contractor was a buddy of whoever doled out the contract to build it, and I’ll also bet THAT bid was not the lowest one.
***********************************
The contractor has a long and successful history with the city of Allen. The same firm built many of the new public schools there over many years and there have been no major problems with those structures.

reread ... I said what they saved they gave to themselves, meaning what they may not have paid a Construction Mgr went to themselves as bonuses....

I wasn’t very clear was I....Usually ‘ ‘ something when I am being facetious.
